Matchpoints. Vanilla 2/1.

Obviously some confusion about whether 3C shows extras and how much.

Making 7 after opponents ducked spade at trick 1.

Scored 7/12 matchpoints, so no disaster here.

South, 2 is far more clearly strong, if North bids 3NT then South can easily bid 5NT and North bid 6.

The blame is entirely S's.

I think the idea that he bid 5N is flawed. Yes we have lots of hcp but we have no real fit and our AKQ's aren't pulling their usual weight because they are in short suits.

In addition, 5N might mean a lot of things, but I don't know when it ever invites a pass. It is usually a choice of slams.

The quantitative bid that looks for slam without forcing to slam is the natural raise to 4N, and that is what S should bid. N has the world's easiest acceptance with that heart suit and the K of : note that he didn't promise 1st or 2nd round control when he bid 3N, which is one reason that S can't commit to slam.

Agree to chorus - south is fully to blame.

Adding one perspective - South could have redeemed a bad 3 rebid (2 is much much better) by bidding 4N instead of passing (18+ Balanced). North can count 6-7 tricks and will bid 6N.
