This hand is the reason to give up on 1 shows 5 spades and double 4....

Now you can bid X or 1 to show the spades and the other bid to show a hand with no clear direction.

Another possibility is to bid 1 NT without a stopper and if they take the first 5 tricks, claim the rest.

if partner has extras, he shall ask you about the stopper on the way to 3 NT- but this is a worse agreement, it simply wrongsides some games.

Without these tools, I would pass with a big sigh to make sure that partner knows that I have a problem hand.

Sure. A value showing double (or 1 if you reverse the calls) is perfect for this hand. But those are not the conditions of contest, so one is left with a pass as the only reasonable option.

I would happily bid 2. Sometimes you just have to pass because there is no bid, but KQx of clubs is more than enough for me here. It gets the character of the hand across, and even if we play 2 in a 3-3 fit it may not be bad.

I was going to bid 2C but I saw a unanimous vote for pass and I was too scared to vote. Now 655321 has bid 2C and I look like I'm parroting.

Bye 50.

This hand is a great argument for transfers over interference of our one-openings. When we have a stopper ourselves, it does not matter who declares because the stopper is over the bidder. But if our stopper is Kx with opener then it has to be played by opener.

I have no problem passing over 1. Maybe it's because I've always done it and I think it has usually worked out fine. I don't like 2 personally. It makes me too likely to play in the wrong suit instead of bidding 2NT if 2 comes back, which shows pretty much this exact hand. I think the only reason bids like 2 work out more than I feel like they should is they cause the opponents to misjudge your trump length.

My partner has a 4-3-2-4 12 count and I hope they don't bid game.

OK that's a reach but the hand definitely does not belong to us until further notice and I'm not sending that message to pard who would be full value to compete too high or/and then double something we can't beat.
