Obvious pass?

Recommended Posts

Hands like this are why I don't like to play a weak notrump. If I have this shape with 14 or less I'm happy to pass. If I have it with 18-19 I'm happy to bid. If I have it with 15-17 I don't know what to do. Here I would pass (and it seems clear to me with 15 and Kxx of clubs) but on a similar hand with xxx of clubs we could belong in a major suit partscore if partner has a five card or longer suit without much strength, but we would want to pass it out if partner doesn't have a 5+ major or 4+ diamonds.

It's not the weak NT that's a problem here; it's the mini NT.

If you're playing a 12-14 NT, your 1D bid promises either an unbalanced hand or 15+ hcp. This means partner can (and should) make a negative double of 2C (or a non-forcing free bid if that's your agreement) on as little as Axxxx Qxxx xxx x, and hence you should pass. The situation here is different because, with the 10-12 NT, you are now maximum for your bidding rather than minimum.
