This robot bidding seems strange to me. Have I fooled the robot in some way?

1. The robot was planning to show the hand as a 3-card limit raise. Thus it chose to go through 1nt forcing, as it would if it was unpassed hand. It does not play drury, nor does it adjust for its passed hand status by choosing 2c.

2. After 1M-1nt-2nt, GIB plays transfers. This is a rather advanced treatment, not unheard of, but you have to be on the ball and read the highlighted explanation. Using transfers allows one to sign off in suits other than clubs, or to show a suit (hearts most importantly) before bidding 3nt, or showing spade support then bidding 3nt as choice of games. But perhaps this treatment is a bit too rare, arguably GIB should not use it.

3. It interpreted your 4h bid as a slam try in spades, so it cooperated, with the 5M it trots out way too often as opposed to cue-bids or blackwood.

Is this explained on the convention card or in the system notes? I can't find it.

  • 5 months later...

After this problem I have been eager to check what the Robot means with the bid, but still got lured!!

It has happened more than once that the Robot claims points, which it does not have. Yesterday for instance I had a hand of 23p and when the Robot bid 3H after a while I checked what it meant and I could read 12 - total, so I raised to 6H. However when the Robot showed its cards it had 3p. Have I misunderstood something? When I count points I give 4,3,2,1 for A,K,Q,Kn and 3,2,1 for 0,1,2 card in a suit.

Huh??

Normally you write "- 12" for 12 or fewer and "12 - " for 12 or more. Is this a special Bridge convention you use?

12- seems fine to me for 12 or fewer.

12+ would be natural for 12 or more, not 12-, IMO. GIB uses n+ for "n or more" in its explanations.

"- 12" to me is "negative 12". It would have to be written as "0 - 12" pts for me to think of it as 12 or fewer.

What lindgm is referring to is 'x' - 12, as in the range from x to 12, and usually including both x and 12, and the same with 12 - 'x'. Even before I took up bridge, I've always taken 12- as 12 or less, and 12+ as 12 or more, so it's not special.
