Hanoi5
Hand 1:♠x♥AKJTxxx♦xxx♣xx Hand 2♠Jx♥AKJTxxx♦xx♣xx You dealt, white vs red. MP's.
MrAce
They both look like a perfect textbook 3♥ to me, although i am aware that the fashion lately is to preempt 1 level higher at these colors and i like it. Whatever i choose, i would never argue with someone who chooses the other though. I think best is whatever your pd is expecting you to hold at these colors. I would just open them both 4♥ to be honest at these colors. I am not very strong on 2nd hand though, i am just saying what i would do at the table. gszes
they are both roughly a 3h bid however hand 1 has the extrapotential to cause an error in opps estimation of their hand and that seems to make it worth the extra level.
Codo
I am old, boring and bad, so I use my textbook calls for textbook calls.

ggwhiz
I am old, boring and bad, so I use my textbook calls for textbook calls. I'm older, anal retentive, worse and love it when pard bids 3nt. If they bid say 4♠ I'll bid 4nt.
Fluffy
I'd open 3♥ on default, but this is the kind of hand I'd open 4♥ if my opponents are clearly better than the field (MPs) or clearly better than my team mates (IMP Team Match)

the hog
The first is an obvious 4H at this vul, the second is 3H for me as I dislike a 7222 shape.

You would double cross your partner like that?Your pd may have bid 3NT on Qxx of H and nothing else for starters.
SteveMoe
As noted by many friends above, both are textbook 3-bids. Rule of 2-3-4.However, on hand 1 they have one more ♠ to play with, and I want to take space out of their auction. I will open 4♥ primarily to make their slam finding apparatus harder to start. Wishful thinking department: I could bid 2.5 ♥ on 2 and smile as my +125 scores better than -50 ;)I hate 7222.
Finch
I'd open 4H on 2713 as well, it doesn't have to be a singleton spade.
JLOGIC
How is 3H a textbook bid with 7321 and AKJTxxx of hearts w/r? Seems like a textbook 4H
SteveMoe
How is 3H a textbook bid with 7321 and AKJTxxx of hearts w/r? Seems like a textbook 4HPerhaps textbooks come in a range of quality - ;)Perhaps better said: Rule based preempts - and we all know what happens with unthinking adherence to rules...
