Vanguard64
Can anyone recommend a book that provides some general rules of thumb for deciding on an opening lead? There are times when I just don't have a clue. Thanks.
semeai
Can anyone recommend a book that provides some general rules of thumb for deciding on an opening lead? There are times when I just don't have a clue. Thanks. Here's a big list of bridge books. There are multiple ones on opening leads (just search in the page for "opening lead"). Mike Lawrence has one, and it gets an enthusiastic blurb on that page, and his books are always really good, though I haven't read that one. It does seem like it's out of print, though. daveharty
Easley Blackwood's Complete Book of Opening Leads is pretty comprehensive. For a more recent book, check out How the Experts Win at Bridge by Burt Hall and Lynn Rose-Hall (I believe Larry Cohen's name is also attached to later editions of the book, but not the one I have). The chapters on defense and opening leads are worth the price of admission, with very clear treatments of fundamental concepts. Welcome to the Forums! Phil
I have a copy of Mike Lawrence's opening leads. Its pretty good, although David Bird's appears to turn it on its ear.
Quantumcat
There's a beginner book on defence, by Root, that covers opening leads in depth as well as other useful beginner defence stuff, like signals, when to cover, when to duck, etc. I don;t remember the title but it's quite big and thick and has a white cover with green writing covering it.
