SimonFa
IMPS, WvW, partner deals. ♠ 5♥ JT632♦ AQ8632♣ 7 1NT (P) ? When faced with this I thought all possibilities were available from slam to 2-level struggling. I tried transfer to Diamonds then bidding 4H for no other reason that I just couldn't see any way to what level we should be in and didn't want to be the only one missing game, even if it was W v W. Partner corrected to 5D which was -2, as was 4H for those who tried that route. Would anyone else stop in 3D, the only made contract out of 13, once you decide to bid or is this always destined to game level failure? As always, thanks in advance? Simon Partner had: AKQ9 97 T97 AQT6
MrAce
If i remember correctly Justin Lall in another thread in the past said he transfers to diamons and then bid his 5 card major at 4 level. Not sure if this hand qualifies for it and not sure if thats what it means for everyone but seems to me it is quite handy for that type of hands. Not sure if this hand qualifies for it and not sure if thats what it means for everyone but seems to me it is quite handy for that type of hands. The problem with that is that 3NT may well be your only game.If I look at declarer's actual hand I would want to be in 3NT, but no other game has much of a chance.Simple is often best: Transfer to hearts and then bid your second suit diamonds. If partner bids 3NT over this, as he would here, pass. I like another idea of Justin Lall: after 1NT-2♦-2♥-3♦ --> 3♥ confirms diamonds, not hearts. This makes it clear that you should pass 3NT, since opener had a cheap alternative to confirm diamonds without bypassing 3NT. Fluffy
you want to play game anytime partner has 3 hearts and avoid it when he has 2, but there is no real way to acomplish it. 1NT-2♦2♥-3♣ (natural 4♣. GF) Now partner will either bid 3♥ with 3 wich leads us to 4♥, or very likelly, accept clubs. When he supper accepts clubs he will do it with 3♦ or 3♠, if clubs were just accepted with3♦ this could be a funny option since you just pass the acep bid!. But 3♠ would mess things a lot, so this idea is probably not very good.
han
I would transfer to diamonds and bid 4H.
Codo
Does anybody know how likey it is to face partner with all all nearly all his strength in the black suits? If this is likey, Rainers way should work better. If it is unlikely, Justins idea should work. I would surely bid game. But I do not have Justins way avaiable, so I had transfered to ♥ and passed 3 Nt after I had shown diamonds and my partner no interesst in my suits. Phil
I would transfer to diamonds and bid 4H. Hopefully Kickback is disabled.
JLOGIC
Hopefully Kickback is disabled. This is a good point, and in fact I have given up on 2N then 4H as a 5-6 non slammish since I think kickback is more important (but still play it with 2S then 4M and 2N then 4S). Obviously not a relevant point if you don't play kickback. With bad hearts and good diamonds, it is reasonable to try and keep 3N in play and just treat this as a 5-5 anyways, that is what I'd do. With AQxxxx, I think 3N is pretty likely.

Maybe I remembered it sub-consciously, which is most likely if I found that sequence. I pick up so good may tips from here I often forget what I've agreed with partner.
Zelandakh
I like another idea of Justin Lall: after 1NT-2♦-2♥-3♦ --> 3♥ confirms diamonds, not hearts.Even better is for 1NT - 2♦; 2♥ - 3♣ to show diamonds. Now 3♦ is available as a natural way to show 4+ diamonds and 2 hearts and you can still use 3♥ to agree hearts. Hands with clubs can go via a 2♠ (or 2NT) rebid so you do not lose very much by playing 3♣ as a transfer here.
