First I object to the bidding, as I would open 1 (10 hcp, 3 control pts, 13 distributional points = 26 Zar's). Now I never see what to do after passing three times iwth an opening hand.

In general if your parnter had a penalty double of 1 (trap pass), he would have acted over 2 (double then to show hearts and diamonds). With four spades, we can't believe partner has enough spade to make a penalty double now... being an individual i am worried, a lot about pass, even with an "expert". Playing with random players can be frightening.

So rather than what this should be, let's see if we can work out what our unknown partner has. We have 10hcp, and rho opened, let's be fair, and say he has minimum of 12. Does West play preemptive jump shifts to 2, you are entitled to know?

I will assume yes for this answer, so west has at least 9 hcp and no heart fit. That leaves partner with at most 9 hcp. I am going to be bidding to avoid the disaster of 2x making.

So partner is weak, with one unbid suit, and I am a passed hand. What kind of hand can he have for this bid? I am thinking spade void, good hearts long diamonds, something like void - ATxxx - Axxxx - JT. Opposite this, the perfect hand, we have a play for 5, but that still requires a lot of luck. So, ok.. I am only bidding only 3.

Ok, next let's assume an immediate 2 would not be preemptive. now the spade bidder can have 6 and four to six points. This gives partner 13 points or so. Now this is a spade taekout, a prototype hand would be spade shortness, the five hearts we think he has, four/five diamonds. I guess I will still bid 3, but we could easily be missing 5 even 3NT, and 2 could be hurt if parnter has three spades to AQx, for instance.

Final note, does good/bad 2NT apply here? Of course not, you have passed three times. 2NT would be scrambling, looking for best contract. 3 simply says, hey, diamonds are our suit.

P but think 3D is close second choice.

Playing 2/1 style I am learning, I think I can open 1d on this junk.

Still another great bid quiz. Will assume partner has around 1444 so 17 total trumps before adjustments. Will assume neg one adjustment so 16 total trumps?

If they make 2 spades we are down 1 in 3d, if we make 3d they maybe down 1 in 2 spades.

Pd cannt have 1444 17HCP hand in this sequence. ONly if you think ur pd or opp psyched. Or misclicked if played on BBO.

I wouldn't have opened.

Now I pass, hoping for 200.

If they make it, I'll try to

win the post-mortem.

nikos

hehehe

i don't usually enter into post mortem debates, unless i've actually done something systemically wrong... usually i just say 'ok' and have another drink

i agree with this, but do you think there's a difference between the direct 3d and 3d via 2nt? or are you saying 2nt denies diamonds? if it does, 2nt is very very wrong

The direct 3 bid expresses a strong preference to play in Diamonds.

Imagine that.

Bidding 2NT initiates a scramble and shows either three or two places to play

Bidding 2NT and pulling clubs to Diamonds says I have two places to play and one of them ain't clubs...
