The ♥T looks like a singleton, so I hop up with the ace, ruff a club, and take a trump hook. I will need a decent trump position but the chances aren't too bad. I guess that pays off to ♥Tx though. ahydra Posted August 17, 2012 Report Share Posted August 17, 2012 3S is ugly for me - probably because I play 4cM - but even in 5cM, doesn't the North hand look like a textbook negative X? Then we play the sensible 4H or 4S. On the given auction 4C is an overbid (not so bad at MPs). 5S is... wtf. Anyway, billw55's line looks good to me with the exception of the fact that West might well now give his partner a club ruff. Perhaps one should play the spade finesse first, hoping for Hxx with West and Hx with East (or East holding KQx) so that one can draw two rounds of trumps and use dummy's last spade for the club ruff? kayin801 Posted August 17, 2012 Report Share Posted August 17, 2012 I think 4♣ is bad, South doesn't have a slam try opposite a hand that can only invite (or possibly just compete!). I'd guess the lead is a stiff, I'll pop A and try a spade finesse. If righty splits I'll ruff a club before playing my second round of spades. Sucks if this lead is a doubleton. I don't want to ruff a round of clubs first cause if LHO has Hx in spades he returns his other spade and now we're down on whatever heart holding he had. I'm not worried about an overruff cause on most lines where RHO can overruff a club we're down no matter what we do. I guess we can cater to a layout where 4♠ goes down where we can hold our unders to 1 but I don't see why that layout is more likely than one where 5♠ is making. In the play, we have to decide whether West has a singleton heart, or ♥10x plus a spade honour. A singleton seems more likely, because 10x is an unattractive lead. Also, East didn't double 4♦ That suggests that West has something in diamonds, which gives him less room for hearts.
