I doubt that I had bid 2 ♠, but now I try 5 ♠.

I think this hand comes down to a decision as to whether we are willing to bid unilaterally over 4♥. If we are then we should probably start with 3 or 4♣ so that 4♠ over 4♥ shows our hand and lets partner make the 5 level decision. Anyway, having taken this route I would try 5♠ and hope that hiding the clubs allows the defenders go wrong somehow.

This - I would have shown both my suits first time so partner could judge.

 

However I would guess 5♠ rather than pass.

No you are not! You are 5-6, but chose, for reasons that escape me, to bid as if you were 6-5.

 

Given the hcp weakness and our shape, it would have been very unusual for 3♣ by us to have ended the auction, and we could therefore have expected to show our 5=6 via a later spade bid. That sequence would have allowed partner to contribute to our dialogue.

 

Having decided to mastermind, we now have to decide what to do. We created this problem for no apparent reason. Bidding 5♠ feels like I am the lead lemming heading for the cliff, but I still do it.....while promising myself that next time I will bid intelligently.

It has been over 70 years since SJ Simon wrote, "when in doubt, bid one more." I still believe it.

 

More specifically, 5♠ only loses when both contracts are down, which seems unlikely on this hand and auction. (Unless perhaps partner holds a stiff club and leads it.)

You have a secret weapon in clubs, not bad tactics as it turns out. I'm diving with a shot at making 5♠ opposite a stiff club or certainly beating their game score.

p that passed originally and piped in with 4s. we might easily make 5s

 

just as they might easily make 5h. The 5s bid should at worst be a very

cheap insurance policy against 5h making. Dont even consider x

a pass merely means you prefer to let the opps make the last error

or the 5 level belongs to the opps. These policies are a ton more acceptable

at MP where it is just 1 board. Bidding 5s should virtually guarantee you

will escape with -300 at worst and possibly even score up a double swing.

Yes, KQJ10x, x, x, AKQxxx or similar. We play 4♣ forcing as we do over a 2♥ opener, so 3♥ as ♠/minor picks up the weaker hands.

I'd just rather not go past 3♠ on the weak hands where partner has his usual xx, KJxx, KQxxx, xx.
