I'm sure it's spade shortage. But Im NOT sure if hearts or diamonds are trumps.

Frances's version is probably what I'd expect without discussion. But you could certainly agree that this was 1-4-4-4 or 1-4-5-3 (assuming that an immediate 3S response to 1D would NOT show 1-4-4-4)

If we don't play strong jump shifts, then he has a strong heart single-suiter with a spade shortage.

This

All other relevant hand-types can afford to bid 2 first. Well, it is possible that going through 2 would be awkward in some situations, but no more and usually far less awkward than using 3 as some kind of 2 (or 3) way bid.

this type of bidding caters to two types of hands but both essentially are

asking if partner has the spades stopped.

1. self splinter with long strong hearts

2. long strong diamonds maybe wondering if 3n is better than 5d

If we are playing strong jump shifts then hand 1 is out.

We can use this 3s bid if we are not playing strong jump shifts to

show both hand types since we can correct any dia contract to hearts.

ex type hands might be

x AKJTxxx Ax Axx

xx Axxx KQJxxx A

The full hand here:

[hv=pc=n&s=saj74h6dk752cat94&w=s2hjt95432dt4c862&n=s9hakq8daq863ck53&e=skqt8653h7dj9cqj7&d=s&v=0&b=11&a=1dp1h1spp3s(Splinter%20-%20Diamond%20support)p3np4dp4sp6dppp]399|300[/hv]

3 was intended as a Splinter showing support.

Had I wanted to find out about a " stopper" I could certainly have bid 2 and partner would bid NT.

So....3 must be a splinter.

4 then, was Minorwood, and, we are off to the races.

My partner at the time, also thought the 3 bid was a stopper ask, though in hindsight he agrees with my bidding.

I was curious about what the forum experts would think since my partner and I had a slight disagreement over this.

Thanks! :D

3 is short, I would take it as diamonds rather than hearts, I´d like to know that partner has more than 0-2 for an autosplinter in my major.

Why? As long as you know about the misfit then splinterbidder just has to have an appropriate suit for his bid. Same as 1M-1N-4x if that is agreed as autosplinter.

In my system I would think 3 was splinter for diamonds, because we play 3 forcing. But it would be undiscussed. In standard, where 3 would be inv, I would assume 3 was an autosplinter with hearts. Thanks for the problem - I will clear this with my partner.

Yes but that case is exceptional, my metha rule says that in general splinter shows fit for last suit partner has shown. Only when there is never a suit shown it is autosplinter. That goes to say that for me a bidding like 1-1-1NT shows 2-3 spades, 1NT is conceptually a kind of support for me, I know this is far from mainstream way of thinking althou it really doesn't matter much.

BTW I also play 1-1NT-4 as 5-6.
