BBOSkill has stopped it's invaluable service due to high numbers of members using BBO, and, they, say, lack of help/support from BBO

I certainly benefitted from BBOSkill, recommend it to others and would appreciate it working again

The only feature missing from the BBO system is a "reasonable" method of rating the skill of players. OKBridge has the "Lehman Ratings", and though imperfect, it helps to estimate comparative skills. BBOSkill is trying to fill this void and BBO should either support it or provide an alternative.

I think BBO should aid bboskill.com in continuing service. For those who don't know, the site allows you to follow your skill level by aveaging you previous months scores. I use it every day.

Because you forgot last month's score a day later? :)

I guess that saves paper.

lol shillssssss

lol

If by shill you mean am I blatantly advertising and advocating for a site for which I have no affiliation whatsoever, but really enjoyed the free service they were providing, I'm guilty as charged.

(Frankly, I couldn't care less if online ratings are provided by bbo, bboskill, ACBL, ELO, FIDE, or Charles Goren's granddaughter. I'd just like to be able to find them *somewhere*.)

I do hope that BBO can see its way to supporting BBOSkill. I use it often as a way of gauging my ongoing scores and skills around the table and particularly when another player is under rating themselves and by informing them, it can then be used to boost their confidence. It certainly provides an interesting topic for conversation with other players. Yes it may be slow at times but patience is a virtue. I hope others agree with me, Davepen.

I was disappointed to log in to bboskill and find it not responding today.

In my opinion it is a big bonus to BBO users.

It is interesting to see one's own record, of course.

Also it debunks players who pretend to be better or worse than they are, and gives a valuable independent way of finding the playing strengths of players - let's face it in bridge clubs and tournaments we soon know this, but online at BBO players can - and do - call themselves world class who would barely get 50% at a local duplicate. Or intermediate when they are rather strong. Both happen a lot on BBO asnd it is a weakness on the site.

For this reason I think bboskill helps elevate the status of bbo, which as we all know is already a very fine bridge site.

The EBU (English Bridge Union) has introduced it's NGS (National Grading Scheme) and this is having a similarly good effect on bridge in England.

Thanks for reading!

Just learned that bboskill.com stopped today, wish I knew what to do to get it back. I already miss it, not just to see how I am doing but also to find my partner's or opponents skill. And it also made me laugh when a self proclaimed 'expert' turned out to be an intermediate.

bboskill proved its usefullness and fills a gap as BBO itself doesn't give players rightly earned levels, which is a pity.

Why on earth would BBO pay these yahoos one dime when they could easily have instituted this service years ago? Or rather, implement it themselves now for free?

It's just LOL that bboskill thinks they're providing some service to BBO. They are offering nothing BBO couldn't do themselves. It's consistently been the position over the years that this was something BBO just wasn't going to do.

BBO skill is a very poor way of rating players.

First of all your score on BBO is compared to 15 other pairs, which is hilarious knowing the amount of players online every day.

In comparison: OKbridge compared 52 pairs AND did not count the top 2 and bottom 2 scores for the average to compare with.

On BBO scores for one board mean next to nothing since players frequently don't finish a board, since they play only a few cards to move on to a team game or a tourney (this happens at least 10 times a day at my table), then the board is finished by a new player who has no clue about the play before, or it gets claimed. Often angry players bid 7NT in rage and redouble, then leave, or stay and claim. Or claim down 10 in a board which is only down 1 or 2.

On BBO there are many pick up partnerships with none or very few agreements, lots of boards get ruined because of lack of agreements (3 misunderstandings per board is not uncommon).

Then there are the players who just start to play bridge and rate themselves expert or better, you play with them, get a few terrible scores, stop playing, meanwhile BBO skill thinks you are a beginner.

BBO skill uses only PART of these really silly scores, ONLY the previous month. So if you don't play a month, or just a few boards, your rating drops dramatically.

BBO skill should go where it belongs: in the toilet.
