is 4D response slam interesting?

Recommended Posts

In 2/1 this is a slam auction plain and simple. Any bid past 3n after a minor opening (except 5 minor after 3n) says "Partner, I have a fit for your minor and undisclosed assets."

In SAYC should be the same thing but I know some who play it as a badly flawed hand that does not want to play NT even opposite known strength (i.e., singleton or void and fear of Nt going down due to it).

I agree that 4 diamonds is a slam try. The bid I do not like is West's 3NT without a heart stopper. I believe a 3 diamond call is about right on strength and nature of the hand. This will allow west to bid 3NT with a slightly weaker hand and a vulnerable heart stop such as Kx. Right siding hands like this will produce many MPs over the long run.

Weast's 3NT without a heart stopper is a bad bid, you can go down 2 in a hand cold for 5d or 6d.

4d is a slam try, now I usually agree with my pd that a 4NT bid by a hand that had just bid 3NT is to-play deniying any slam interest at all.

Of course this is not the case of the west hand that should bid 4s over 4d showing a spade control and deniying a heart control.

All you need from partner is HA or a friendly lead + SA, or heart 4-4 + SA to have some

good play in 3NT, so 3NT wasn't that horrible in my opinion. do you expect partner to bid 3NT over 3D with something like SJTxxx HAxx Dxx Cxxx?

Also, the doubler might not know which suit to lead, since his partner never bids.

Interesting. Will West bid the same if there is no double? I guess we agree that 3NT shows some kind of gambling type but not with this. If you really want to create a GF auction, I don't mind bidding 3C.

Dummy has SJTxxx HAxx Dxx Cxxx,

so they have 22 HCPs combined and they sell out?

If 3N is worthy trust, then he should have at least 7 casrd akqxxxx and a side honor, so what is the point to bid 4d? If you want to show slam interest, then leap to 6d. you know the problem lies in club. If pd has c control, it is laydown. So best chance for slam is to leap to 6 directly. This hand is not appropriate for fine bidding, i think.
