One, two, three, four

Zero spades for me. My partners lose their sense of humor, but not their fondness for forcing to game on misfitting 12s, if I open too many hands like this.

I play intermediate two bids, so this decision is easy for me in my main partnership. In a standard partnership, I think I'd open 1 and keep bidding spades for a while. I don't particularly object to 3S 1st seat, and that would be my 2nd choice, though I think 1 is better.

2 for me - no spots and too much Defense for 3, most people want a few more HCP for 1 (I wouldn't even attempt it unless 1 is limited), and partner will NEVER believe that I have this good a hand if I initially pass. Why are so many people saying Pass is an option, seriously???

The plan in the title sounds good to me, but OK I wouldn't bid spades a fourth time. Side question:

1S-1N

2S-3S (assuming 3-card limit raises would raise to 4S)

?

1S-1N

2S-2N

?

I think I'd bid 4S over the first and 3S over the second, but maybe I should pass the first one?

You would also rebid 4S over 1N and 2N from partner?

Definetely.

EDIT: Sorry, no, not over 1NT and then 2 NT where pd can have stiff . I thought u are asking something different.

Basically i would do what you said you would before you questioned yourself.

With two aces? However did we have such a successful partnership...

I'd probably pass, second choice 1.

ahydra

Never preempt with two aces - although I once opened a weak two with three aces, I assume that's ok?

I also absolutely cannot open 1 in my partnership, pard is super aggressive red at inps and heading for 3nt way too often on chunky 11's.

By agreement our 2 bids are more constructive than 3 here so I'll try that and cross my fingers. It's an uncomfortable hand for sure. I could miss game but that's more excusable than going for 800.

First quote=most eloquent. Second quote=good follow-ups...maybe we "should" pass 1S-1N-2S-3S, but we know we wouldn't.

So, 1>>>Pass>>3>>>2>>>4?

No. If you switch around a few cards, it is not hard to make this hand into a 2 bid (AJxxxx instead) or a 3 bid (KJTxxxx instead) or a 4 bid (KJTxxxxx). But my choice is still clear. I don't think this is a contradiction. A pass is a bit further (at least to me). OK, make it Axxxxx of spades and KJ outside.

I don't expect to lose a lot of imps if I choose 2S or 3S. But that's also not what we should be talking about a clear choice. Say you give me a normal balanced 14 count. I would open it with 1C/1D, but would I expect to lose a lot of imps if I opened it with the other minor? If I opened it 1NT? Not really. Do I consider the decision choice? Also not.

Opening 1 is no good, you make things easy for opponents and hard for your partner. How's he ever going to know you actually had a 3 opener? :)

Certainly glad you added the emoticon. For a second I thought you might mean some part of what you wrote.

I really do favour a 3 opening here - I added the emoticon to show that the suggestion it's a clear-cut 3 opener is a joke.

Hanoi5 - can you tell us what you (or whoever had this hand) did at the table?
