How much can you chew?

Interesting. I'm sure I'd bid 4 but I don't know now if it's right, if I'm thinking of how the play will go. I like playing 3 as semi-preemptive (i.e. partner can reraise with a real max and/or 4 hearts), maybe that's the best shot.

I like a game try. While it might seem as though partner has short clubs, you never really know.... partner could have two or three small clubs and a stack of diamond cards, to the extent that we might not even make three (take xxxx xxx KQJx Qx; this is even a pretty sound raise but our chances of making even 3 are poor). Anyway, we don't want to play partner for the worst possible hand (so passing is out) but it pays to hedge our bets by making a try. Probably a short suit game try is ideal if you play them; otherwise a try in spades is fine.

Hmm...seems like it's a toss-up between gambling 4 (hoping to get a more favourable lead) or a scientific GT (passing isn't an option IMO).

A more interesting question is what bid constitutes a GT in this situation. In our methods, in an unobstructed auction, 2 over 1 - 2 would be a Kokish GT.

It seems that 2 will work regardless of whether pard interprets it as Kokish or HSGT...

I think I heard Meck say once (or heard someone say that they heard Meck say once, or heard someone say that they heard someone say that they heard Meck say, or ...) that if you open a 6-bagger and partner raises that you should just bid game. I'll go ahead and do that.

if we play short suit game tries, I would make one and respect partner's decision. This is a classic danger hand, in that even if partner has short clubs, so does RHO, and the possibilities of overruffs are high.
