Computer hand.....HA!

Recommended Posts

So after a long layoff from bridge, I decided to come back and play some sessions.

I get dealt this gem in 2nd chair, white on red:

x

KJx

A

AKQJ9xxx

Yep, the computer has given you a God-divined 8 card solid club suit. As you are plotting your strong auction, RHO chimes in with 1.

Partner is of decent strength and can reason some things out. What do you do? And, there is a follow-on to this.

Yes, 3 asking for 3NT if partner has a spades stopper.

If partner does NOT have a stopper, then continue with 5?

Does your system have a way to ask for aces without setting trumps? Partner could conceivably have an Ace.

Considering that I don't think we even have a way to ask for aces in this sequence.... :D

So I trotted out 3 and hear 4 by pard. Now what?

My fear about 4NT is that if pard comes back with 5 showing a keycard, I could be driving to slam with trumps being poor.

I've gotta believe ptr has at least the Q or A for the 4 bid. Granted, after a 5(1 KC) response to RKC, Axxxxx is in the realm of possibilities. Nonetheless, a 5 Q/K ask does the trick. If ptr denies the Q, I'll bid 6 believing my chances of finding the Q or having a squeeze after running all my clubs makes the club slam a good bet. And of course, if ptr shows the Q, I'll bid 6.

For exactly these type of hands, I'm a big advocate for the Q ask following RKC not promising all 5 KCs (although 5NT should).

using 3s to ask p to bid 3n is quite common---if p cannot bid 3n they will generally

bid 4c (pass or correct to 4d) and it is up to you what to do next. Your p bidding 4h

however (knowing YOU have to have something in heart to use 3s) shows a lot of

hearts. You may or may not ever get to p hand but it seems definitely worth the

risk of trotting out 4n (key card for hearts since your minor is unknown) especially

since rho opened the bidding and if you are missing 2 aces rho rates to have

them both.
