They've stepped into our auction. Let them try to make 1N with 15 opposite 3. 2. 1x - (1y) - 1z - (1N) - Dbl. Some play this penalty, some play this as support. I prefer penalty of all natural NT overcalls. 3. 1x - (pass) - 1y - (1N) - Dbl. Penalty if its a 15-18 overcall. Support if the NT shows the unbid suits. inquiry
Or any general suggestion? 1) All three of these doubles should be penalty2) Drop penalty double after they open 1NT in either seat.

In IMP's take out DBL is not so important in these cases, but in MP's f.i. 2X -1 NVUL can be a top if they make 1NT. ...1 more:1x-(P)-P-(1NT)-DBL: DBL shows strong hand (18-19)? Try not to tailor your bidding too much for MPs / IMPs, although there are exceptions. 1x (pass) pass (1N) dbl - penalty; typically 18-19, but could be a good spade suit and a little less. jtfanclub
I don't claim anybody else plays it this way, though I've never had a problem with it with a pickup partner: (1NT) X= 100% penalty.(1NT) P (P) X=Mixed. Usually in the 12-15 range (sometimes higher, never lower). It's easy to have a penalty double in the direct seat. If you have a long suit, you can set it up on the opening lead, and your points are sitting behind declarer's. One or two dummy entries won't affect your plans. But on balancing seat, it's a lot tougher. Your points are in the wrong place, your partner's unlikely to lead your suit, and sometimes you just need to find a bid to keep the bidding open. Too tough for me to reserve that bid for the 18-19 range.
