Hi all,

let the bidding begin with

1 Heart - 2 Diamond

You have a hand like

Axx,KQxxx,Kx,xxx

What is your rebid?

I guess there are two "schools"

1. Rebid your 5 card major

2. Rebid 2 NT

What is yours? And worse, why?

TIA

Roland

Count me in the 2h reply.

In my 2/1 school 2NT means:

- denies Hxx or 4 card support for pd suit

- denies a 6 card major suit

- Shows stoppers in the spades AND clubs (the unbid suits)

So I just rebid 2M when I have no other option, in this hand I can't bid 2s or 3c nor 2NT so I rebid 2h.

My "school" so rebids 2M very frequently with only 5 cards.

Why? Because 2NT without stoppers in clubs is silly, you are in a game forcing situation, why hurry to bid 2NT if you don't know if you can make it? If we bid 2NT and pd raises with doubleton in clubs we'll feel very silly after they run the first 5 or 6 clubs tricks when we have a cold 4h or 5d game.

Well, Roland's question specifies SAYC so you are NOT in a 100% game force... altho game is in the offing apparently.

This is a common problem hand in any natural system. SAYC requires opener to limit his hand on the 2d bid usually. If this hand had a club stopper then NT would be the obvious solution, but that xxx of clubs is a glaring problem.

I think, through a process of elmination (and assuming you are playing reverss shows strength) that you must rebid 2H here. If partner rebids 3d you can now bid 3s to show a stopper and if partner bids NT you will be happy to play there.

Yes, you risk playing hearts in a 5-2 fit or you may also end up playing D in a 6-2 fit. Altho a 2n rebid is right on shape and points, that lack of a stopper (and with a bad heart suit) seems to eliminate that bid to me.

In SAYC, a 2/1 bid by responder promises another bid unless opener rebids in game. As a result, if you are not prepared to play in 3NT opposite a balanced or semi-balanced 11 points, then you must rebid 2H.

So 2H for me. And I would bid the same even if my 12 points included a stop in both the outside suits.
