SimonFa
IMPS, Red V White. Pickup partner in MBC claims to be Intermediate, not that I take any notice but S/he did have 5000+ logins. RHO deals. ♠ AKQ5♥ 2♦ Q862♣ JT92 ♠ J98632♥ 85♦ AJT5♣ 8 (P) P (P) 1D(1H) 1S (3H) 3S(P) 4S AP Firstly , what do you think of my bidding. I appreciate it was aggressive at these colours but was it too aggressive? Play went: ♥ 4 2 A 8♦ 7 A When I played the Ace partner accused me of being an idiot. I thought it was the correct play at Imps as I couldn't risk losing to the K and then a Diamond ruff. What say you? Given that it doesn't look like the field would get to 4S would you risk the the contract at MPs? As always thanks in advance, Simon EDIT: Oops I really am an idiot. I set the hand diagrams up after the first 2 tricks had been played. Serves me right for trying to post and watch the England V Italy game at the same time. Antrax
Are you sure you have the hands correctly? The diagram you have has the ♠A as the only ace in either hand, and doesn't let you follow suit to the first round of hearts.
Bbradley62
It certainly seems right to guarantee your contract at IMPs. I presume the "missing" North card is a low diamond. I hope you were civil but blunt in your response to CHO.
Bbradley62
Yes P did open 1D.What else would s/he do with 4144 and 12 HCP??
BunnyGo
Sorry simon, I only see 11 cards in the north hand, and 11 in the South. Am I missing something? Based on the play you describe, it sounds very reasonable as a safety play at IMPs--maybe even matchpoints too...but I'm less sure of that. In this case I just pointed out it was IMPs and I wanted to guarantee the contract.
RunemPard
One thing about this hand confuses and amuses me... The opponents are sitting on 10 ♥s and 8 ♣s combined with 22 HCP, yet they were both quiet in the 1st round of bidding. This is quite interesting to me. Why are they so quiet? What hands could they have? Surely neither of them has a singleton ♦?! Based on this I picture hands like... xx (10-12)xxxxxxxxxxx x (10-12)xxxxxxxxxxxx What else could they possibly have to not want to make noise in the 1st round? Even given these hands I cannot imagine why they have been so quiet.

RunemPard
What is MBC?
SteveMoe
The ♦ Ace is automatic at any form of scoring. You are lucky to be in a making game many will not bid. The ♦ finesse adds risk for no real reward - a true practice finesse. Partners who take these finesses routinely become my opponents next round. jjbrr
I have a BBO theory: the first person in a partnership to accuse his partner of being an idiot is always the idiot. I think this holds true because a non-idiot does not have to accuse his partner of being an idiot; rather, he knows when his partner is an idiot and knows it does no good to call his partner an idiot. ETA: T2 diamond A is good.
wank
you're both pretty idiotic - your partner has proved it with her comment and you proved it by playing with MBC randoms. you won't learn anything playing there - you evidently give whatever ***** these people say far too much credence, as demonstrated by your feeling the need to come here to check it. Antrax
It's possible to find a good game with a pickup in the MBC. All it takes is some experience at knowing when to leave - there are two good examples in the thread already. I also don't think there's anything wrong with occasionally checking whether you really are an idiot - you'll either learn something or get an ego boost, either way it's a win. As an aside, it's nice to see the times I had connection problems might cause people to think I'm a better player :)
rmnka447
Rule #1 at IMPS - Do whatever is necessary to make your contract!!! You did it exactly right. I wonder what your partner would have said had you ducked and a ♦ return been ruffed. Risking a +620 for a +650 makes no sense at all especially since the IMP difference between the scores is a big fat ZERO.

I can't deny some of that is true in this case :) But also I'm still figuring out the difference between IMPS and MP. Thanks all, Simon
ArtK78
At IMPs, the ♦A at trick two is the 100% correct play. It is only wrong if RHO is void. I assume that failing to make an overtrick doesn't count as "wrong." This would be true even if the opponents were not cold for at least 10 tricks in hearts (9 tricks may be the limit if they cannot avoid the loss of a club trick). At MPs, it is a much more difficult problem. I would still play the ♦A, as I find it hard to believe that there are many players sitting East who would shift to a diamond looking at that dummy if they have the ♦K. kuhchung
Your bidding wasn't aggressive. I would fly Ace.
aguahombre
Your bidding isn't even on the same planet as "aggressive". It is fine. If the auction were uncontested at IMPS, VUL: 1D-1S2S....bidding 4S would still be right, and not agressive.
