Sure, you have a little more than partner might expect, but in this kind of sequence partner is usually bidding your hand along with his. You could easily be off 2 Aces and a trump or another loser, or have a hand like mike777 gave and get overruffed. By the way, I was watching your table, and by a 3-2 margin (I was one of the three) the kibitzers felt that Pass was better than bidding on.

I just wish Jill wasn't so timid (no offense meant jillybean, just an observation based on today) - in a study Larry Cohen did on a million hands, 3 was the most effective pre-empt of the bunch (if not opening bid), and the North hand had 6-7 tricks.

yeah, I was sitting first seat 854,V,A52,QJT8543 W vs. R and did not preempt.

My preempt style has been very agressive, my partners much more conservative so my openings are in a state of change

at the moment, I am trying to be more conservative. I should have have opened 3 here.

Jilly, you were extremely conservative (timid?) on a few boards like this.

Agree this is a 4 opener.

I would pass with east. Partner needs a lot of leeway in these situations.

I would open xxx - Axx QJT8xxx w/r in 1st seat 4 and to be honest I don't think it's that close. Stick it to them, that's what this vulnerability is for.

I think anything but pass is just bad evaluation - this isn't just about giving partner leeway. I mean, with xxx AKQxxx Axx x I wouldn't be ashamed at all of my 4 bid, and on an unlucky day we are going down in 4.

Agree that the 3073 hand is a 4 opener.

I am sort of right on power but i have a ton of intangibles

huge trump fit

singleton in just the right spot

the interior spades greatly improving chance of zero losers

downside

our dia Q with power to our left may be overrated but at least we have it.

My main problem if decidng to take action is how;;;;

4s seems ideal but is too scary as a natural sounding bid

4n no way this hand can suddenly take control

5h seems to be asking p for club control (with a stronger hand)

so I chose a simple

5c

This does not deny a spade control due to the natural meaning of 4s.

If p can bid 5d (this does not promise a spade control for same reason

only a desire to compete further) we can then press on with a 5s bid.

There is some risk that we will run into a hand where 4h makes exactly

(going down 1 extra trick no bid deal). But this is offset by the huge

rewards that can be gained if we make slam.
