dkham
I don't know how preemptive the 5♦ bid is, and does it play us for having some diamonds (at least 3 say)? The spade king is probably offside, and possibly partner is short in spades for his bid. This devalues the ♠AQJx. It's a poor 18 count. I'm guessing to pass.
Cyberyeti
Would pass at the table not expecting partner to hold an ace very often for this bid, if he has x, x, Axxxxxxx, xxx then that's just unlucky.
ArtK78
I think this is a clear pass. But I would not be shocked if it made 12 tricks.
Finch
I think this is a clear pass and I would not be surprised if it made 10 tricks.Partner might have - xx QJ10xxxxx Qxx, say. Of course, he also might have x x AQJxxxxx xxx.
Statto
Could easily have 2 ♥ losers, or a ♥ and ♠ loser. Might even have a ♦ loser. Pass.
SteveMoe
Pass. If partner were interested in something more s/he had other ways to get there. If we make 6+ AND belong in 6, then we will have a conversation after the round is over.
MrAce
I think this is a crystal clear DBL Would pass at the table not expecting partner to hold an ace very often for this bid, if he has x, x, Axxxxxxx, xxx then that's just unlucky. I also think if we pass with this hand or similar hand types, just to look cool by not doubling when they were making, our opponents will not even need this much ♦ in your example to frequently abuse us. Yes, there will be times that they are making this 5♦. But most of the time RHO is bidding 5♦ because he believes we have game, and he is expecting not to go down more than 500, trying to waste as much space as he can to prevent us from making the correct decision. Looking at my spade suit, i believe pd must have reason to make a vulnerable overcall. They wont RDBL you when u have this. What can happen worst ? You bail 5 imps ? Or pd bids 5 and goes down 1 when they are down 1 ? How about we are making 5 and they are making 5 ? Or how about we are making 4 and they are down 2 ? How about we are down 1 in 5 and they are making ? Not that pd will always make the right decision but he will never make a good decision if we pass with this. EDIT: See my 2nd reply, thanks to Csaba
