rasmuskold
Matchpoints, red/red, partner deals and passes, RHO opens 2♠ (weak). What is your call? Is it close? ♠A53♥A52♦AQ72♣AQ2
awm
My general agreement for showing balanced hands over opponents' 2M is: (1) Bid 2NT is about 15-18(2) 3NT is 19+ with doubleton (or maybe singleton?) in the other major, and also handles some "running suit" type hands(3) Double then 3NT is 19+ with 3 in other major (so partner can correct to 4M with five)(4) Double then 3♦ over partner's likely 2NT lebensohl bid handles 19+ with 4 in other major By these agreements, double on this hand is clear. Even without the detailed agreements above, I like double on this hand. The hand is too strong for 2NT, and a 3NT contract will likely play better from partner's side (imagine partner has a spade holding like Qx or Jxx). The double also gives us a chance to find a 4♥ contract if partner has a bunch of hearts, which 3NT really doesn't (a direct 3NT could be a running diamond suit and a stopper, so partner shouldn't remove it to 4M unless holding a good six-card suit). Finch
You are too good for a 2NT overcall. Also, if you are going to play in 3NT it's likely to be better played by partner. Also, double then 3NT suggests doubt, so if partner has 5 hearts or a 6-card minor, partner can pull.
