daveharty
In the context of a standardish 5cM system with a 20-21(22) 2NT, which hand/s would you open with 2NT?
mike777
none would open all of them 1d and deal with those issues. over 1s will reverse into 2h, not perfect but..... playing reverse flannery partner will almost never be 5s and 4h and start with 1s. JLOGIC
IMO: Def with stiff K, Def not with stiff J or worse, and "meh" for stiff A and stiff Q. I probably would with stiff A and stiff K but whatever, might depend on my mood with the A and Q.
fromageGB
Agree with Mike - always start 1♦ and reverse over 1♠. However, with the agreement of a "shortage" diamond and a 3 suited NT rebid, this is an easy simple 1♦ 1♠ 3NT. Partner then knows to bid 4♥ if he has 4. han
In Justin's language, Def with stiff king, Def not with stiff jack or worse, and "meh" for stiff A and stiff Q but sooner with this particular stiff queen hand. It looks less good for minor suit slams.
BunnyGo
Why is the King > Ace in Justin and Han's opinions?
lalldonn
I am not han or justin (or am i?) but king is better for rightsiding and worse for slam. I agree with definitely K, maybe A or Q, definitely not J or less. Personally I prefer the Q hand to the A hand.
Mbodell
Why is the King > Ace in Justin and Han's opinions? In general, stiff K is frequently though of as the most nt-oriented stiff. The same hand but with stiff A instead of stiff K will have stiff A as better than stiff K, but the extra point pulls more weight outside the suit so 20 point hands with stiff K is better than 20 point hands with stiff A. Stiff K will often work well enough for stoppers on defense and for support of partner's suit if it ends up as trump.
