inquiry
Double. No other alternative. About 5♠'s, we bid 4♠ vulnerable versus non-vul (and presumably after a preemptive 3♦ bid). So we wanted to be in game. This should establish a forcing pass situation if they bid at the five level white over our vulnerable game. If partner wanted to invite slam, he has a couple ways to do it over five diamonds. The strongest is to pass 5♦ and then bid over your double (if you double). Even then, pass by him and then bidding 5♥ is stronger than pass then bid 5♠. I can see no reason to get excited by partner bidding an immediate 5♠, so I certainly will not bid 6♠. Also, I will not pass, as that is encouraging partner to bid 6♠, and not only do I not want to bid 6♠, I don't want to encourage partner to bid 6♠ by using a forcing pass over 6♦. gnasher
Double, partner's 5♠ means "I think we can make 5♠"Partner will rarely be that certain about anything. When you bid 5 over 5 you often don't know who is making what - you just do it because you have a lot of defence and not much defence, and find out afterwards whether you were making, saving, or wrong.
