I play g/b 2N here, so 3 is a little easier, which shows a decent hand. So, I'm clearly worth some kind of serious upgrade. I think I would like my pard to get another spade bid off his chest first, so I'm going a little slow.

Only 11 HCP? really  ? K & R calls this a 20.05 count! If anything I'm waayyyyy too good for 3.

This is a 5C opener. Patner needs litttle for it to have a shot, needs a lot for me to want to be in 6C, and its fairly likely that they can make 4M but not 5M if they don't have a club void and if they do they may have a slam. Little can go wrong and much can go right.

Give me a void and a ninth club and I'd give serious consideration to opening 6C if our partnership defines that as premptive rahter than twelve sure tricks missing a high trump.

No I don't open 1C. I open 5C. This makes it far harder for the opponents to find a making Major contract or a sacrifice. If pd has an A tough luck.

I cannot for the life of me understand anyone opening 1C and rebidding a non forcing 3C.

Absolutely right!

Opening this 1 is another example of 2-handed as opposed to 4-handed bridge. If the opponents were to keep quiet, 1 would allow you to find out exactly where you want to play. But since they aren't going to keep quiet it is not sensible to give them the chance to find out exactly where they should play!

Matchpoints, all VUL.

You open 1C in first seat (or not?).

Partner bids 1S, and RHO bids 2H. What's you next call?

wouldn't open 1 playing SAYC 2/1 (or of course Precision)

I would open it 4 in 1st position as we are all vul :P

HOWEVER to answer your question ASSUMING I had opened it 1 NOW I would bid 5 ;)

If you open 1 on this hand, ok, then bid 3NT now...

I wouldn't open 1 with most partners, since we can use 2 as semi-GF. Here we have 8-9 tricks, so 2 and a 3 rebid tells my hand. Partner just has to make up his damn mind after that ;)

Opening 4 is absolute madness, why don't you use 4 as preempt?
