If you held AKQxxx, xxx,xx,xxx that would not be a real question...does the J of look so good that you would consider opening 1 a quick 8 losers hand unfavorable?

Btw - I would be thinking of 2 or 3, not 1 or 2.

I see 3 hearts losers together with 2 in each minor. Are you counting a spade loser to go with these? Whether this hand qualifies for 1 or 2 second seat, red is basically a style issue influenced by the system you are playing and simple preference. It probably does not make a huge difference at the end of the day which style a partnership chooses so long as they agree.

Clear 2. After a 2NT enquiry (of whatever kind) we bid 3NT to show a solid suit. I am surprised some want to open this 1...

at these colors I am promising a good 6 card suit

(max 2 losers) and not much else outside. This hand

meets that definition. There is still a chance this hand

belongs in hearts or nt so preempting beyond 2s seems

unreasonable.

Opening 1s with this hand has little appeal.

If you play 2 6-10 then it's a 2 opener, if you play it 0-9 it isn't. We happen to open most rule of 19 hands at the 1 level unless there's a good reason not to, and there's certainly no reason not to here.

The problem is that this is a cast iron 6 tricks in no trump as well as spades. Give partner a twelve count or so with a stiff spade and 3nt has excellent play.

I think that 2S in second seat, vulnerable against not, should fit partner's expectations. This hand does absolutely not fit that description, it is a very different hand from the more typical KQ10xxx xx Kxx xx. I would only preempt with this hand when in third seat, and preferably when white.

Opening 3S (as was mentioned by some posters) at these colors with such a balanced hand makes me sick. I think it is completely off.

Opening 1S seems fine. I have 6 tricks don't I? If partner forces to game I hope I can table this hand as dummy in 3NT.

I'm really surprised to see so many 2S openers. Will they not open 2S with KQ10xxx x Qxx xxx? Or do they open 2S on both, and think it is a good strategy to play wide ranging preempts, vulnerable against not in second seat?

Yes, and, yes, but I don't think these are such wide ranges, and responder has the tools available to distinguish them somewhat if necessary. I don't like opening at the 1 level vulnerable in 2nd seat with no honour card outside my suit. Presumably if J is replaced by x you open 2?

Presumably if ♠J is replaced by ♠x you open 2♠?

Yes. This makes a big difference. Opposite a flat 11 with a stiff spade, AKQJxx is odds on for 6 tricks, AKQxxx requires a 3-3 break.

I agree with Zelandakh, this isn't really a matter of opinion, it's a matter of partnership agreement. This hand is too good for a 2S opening, even second seat at red, for us so I open it 1S. If a 2S opening includes this hand systemically, then I open 2S.

What is a matter of opinion is the merit of opening 3S. I hate 3S. So many bad things and so few good things can happen.
