Game Tries & refusals

Hi All,

 

I have a problem with Gib making games and I refuse he bids game anyway and goes down. Game #4047, hand #3, he made a game try bidding 3D and I signed off in 3H but he went to game anyway which should be a slam try now. Of course, we went down losing 3Ds and the A of clubs. Very frustrating playing sometimes.

(1) After South's 2♥, I think North has a game-forcing hand, not a game-invitational hand.

(2) If 2♥ shows 12-15 total points, then 3♥ should show 12-13 total points, not 12-15.

GIB does this all of the time (makes a game try and bids anyway when you reject). If you make a game try, it also doesn't seem to base whether or not it accepts on which game try you make (e.g. you make a diamond game try and it accepts with xxx of diamonds). It doesn't seem like GIB can "think like a human" in these sorts of auctions. That is, maybe it makes a game try with a game force because that is the most descriptive bid and it knows it can just bid game later.

 

I'm not necessarily convinced 3H should be limited to 12-13. In real life I would accept or reject based on my diamond holding (with some regard to the overall strength of my hand). I guess since GIB insists on bidding a game with 25 total points, maybe making 3H be 12-13 instead of 12-15 is a good patch to get GIB to pass more often.

Completely agreed. My intepretation of the 12-13 explanation would be "I value my hand at 12-13 total points in light of the fact that you are specifically concerned about my diamond holding". I might, in fact, have more total points with three small diamonds. But, since GIB is apparently never going to understand "you invited and I declined, therefore you should stop", hopefully he will work better with "you invited and I declined, therefore I am in the bottom half of my previously-stated strength range".
