shingkit
In an 2/1 auction how to open and rebid with these hands? Which one is better? 1♥or 1♦? Hand A♠ 7♥ 109862♦ AKQ1085♣ A Hand B♠ 7♥ AQJ86♦ AQ10862♣
nigel_k
I would open 1♦ and reverse on both of those examples. If the hand was weaker, e.g. x AJxxx AQxxxx x then I would open 1♥. I might open 1♦ with really bad hearts, intending to just rebid diamonds and give up on a 5-3 heart fit, e.g. A xxxxx AKxxxx x. But even with a heart suit like 1098xx I would consider opening 1♥.
P_Marlowe
Hi, and old question. #1 I would start with 1H, selling the hand as 55, this even with the Ace of clubs being the Ace of hearts#2 I would start with 1D, making the reverse Simple rule - If you dont want to make the reverse, start with the higher ranking suit. With kind regardsMarlowe
Statto
#1 I would start with 1H, selling the hand as 55, this even with the Ace of clubs being the Ace of heartsYuk, that's an awful ♥ suit to start with 1♥. The ♣A is not the ♥A and neither has the same value for the bid. And such a powerful hand too.

Hand A♠ 7♥ 109862♦ AKQ1085♣ A Hand B♠ 7♥ AQJ86♦ AQ10862♣ 3 I'd open both hands with 1♦. But I'll reverse only with hand B. Suit quality matters. Phil
Take a hand like x AJxxx AJxxxx x. For me, it depends on three things: a) relative suit quality, b) strength of hand and c) how close the suits are together. If I choose not to reverse, I can treat my six card minor as five and open the major, or, I can ignore my five card major and open and rebid my six card minor. On my example above, I would open this 1♥. Change it to x Qxxxx AKJxxx x and I would open it 1♦ and rebid 2♦. Add a King and I would reverse. However, if you give me the black suits, then I open 1♣ in all cases. Where it gets close is when we have the round (♥ + ♣) or pointed (♠ + ♦) suits together. awm
Of course, there is also the option to pass a 5-6 ten count. Often you can describe such a hand better by passing and backing in with a two-suited call later than by opening and distorting shape. With the 13s given I will open 1d and reverse. bluecalm
With the 13s given I will open 1d and reverse. I am interested in your view on hand in the middle. say 11-12-13hcp and 5M-6m.I am coming from bridge culture where everybody always open 1M if they have 5 card major but I noticed that most elite players just open longer suit most of the time in good 13+ range. What do you think about those middle hands ? Say:x KQxxx AQxxxx x - AJTxx AQxxxx xxx AQxxx KQJxxx x
Yu18772
I dont think this particularly pertains to 2/1, lots of problems arise when partner answers something much less encouraging than a gf 2/1.....lets say 1NT.I agree with awm that opening these hands with 9-10 counts is not necessarily a good thing. For intermediate hands my rule of thumb is that if I cant reverse I start with the higher suit and show 5-5+ (not showing one card looks to me a lesser evil than potentially hiding a 5 card major). If I can reverse than I dont need to distort the shape and can open the longer suit, however I dont reverse into poor quality suits. So imoHand A - 1♥ planning to rebid 2♦ over partners 1♠ or 1NT, Hand B - 1♦ planning to reverse. http://www.bridgebase.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gifYu
