This always happens at unfavorable of course.

3 pass pass double

pass ?

Now what? 3 is middle-of-the-road type preempt, 1st favorable so 7-card suit or very good 6-card suit (KQJxxx or better).

Weird hand... Particularly given my heart void.

I'm bidding a quiet 3, this has the advantage of keeping things low and not bypassing 3NT

Yuck, double yuck.

Partner might just be "protecting" because he is short in diamonds. We probably will set 3 one, maybe two tricks. On the other hand, I have a great offensive hand.

The best spot might be 4, 5 or six of either black suit. In final analysis, because I can envision game if partner has as little as...

(trump lead, lose diamond, trump, then heart, ruff, diamond ruff, heart ruff, heart ruff, run trumps, and squeeze WEST if he has 4 and 6 in a 4-6-1-2 hand (best defense is spade after second club).

So while we rate to set 3 a trick or two, being vulnerable, and having at least reasonable chances for game on any hand where partner has 3 or more clubs and a balancing double, I will simply bid 5. Note, after five clubs, the auction isn't over. At matchpoints, I give would admire the the red-blooded (and blood chilling), 4 bid here. I wouldn't bid it, but I would admire it.

If we were not vul, and at imps, I would pass 3x here. If we can make 5 we are should get this at least two, so how bad can that be (400 versus 300 to 500).

Sorry but I just can't imagine passing 3D dbled when I may make 5-6 0r even 7C and bidding a 3 card suit when I have a 6 card suit , by choice no less, is something that could take place in a drunken stupor, maybe.

The choices to me are

4D intending to bid 5C over 4H seems the best solution.

5C giving up on slam

6C practical

I'll give partner's hand in hidden text now. Don't peek if you have not voted!

Now this is also not a clear decision and your options are:

Double

3H

3NT

Post mortem: I bid 5 and played it there. As diamonds are 6-0 I won in hand and tested the water with a small diamond from hand. After some thinking West produced a spade. The Ace won and I returned to hand with a heart ruff. I played a trump, ducked by LHO (Queen wins) and another trump on which RHO discards.

As everything else was the way I needed it to be I still won the contract.

In the end all was VERY well as 3NT failed at the other table.

4D seems clear. Much too good to bid 5C. give partner a normal 4414 shape and a normal lets see 12 count (3 level but passout seat).

is a slam. this is definitely an "average" hand and has half the values in hearts which is our void, and slam is STILL on.

J: I don't think you'll like lead, , against 6 with this dummy but the point about making slam is valid.
