Lead problem

Blah.. process of elimination.

!) I am not leading a trump.

2) I am not leading a heart from the AQJ... parnter may or maynot have the king, but we are not going to get rich taking heart tricks. One at most is all we have coming to us.

3) A diamond might be right, but J9 is ackward to lead from, and to get the three trikcs outside of hearts we need, it is hard to believe leadng a diamond will hep us set up tricks

4) Club Queen. If partne rhas king or ACE, we might set up tow, potentiallly three tricks in clubs by attacking. PArtner will not have much, is it asking to much that he his hand is ATx of clubs, with king in dummy? Or Kxx with a spade or diamond trick (say diamond Qxx). Eeven doubleton Club ACE mihght allow four quick tricks if the king is in the pocket.

Those leading the Club Queen win a biscuit. The full hand:

West North East South

 2    Pass  4    4

 Pass  Pass  Pass

HA H2 H4 H7

DJ DQ D2 D4

I think this hand is interesting on a number of levels. Firstly is the decision by South to bid 4 Spades. Secondly, kudos to Gerardo for not raising me with what must look like a very good hand opposite my 4S overcall. I suspect that many people would get overexcited with his hand.

The club Queen is the killing lead, but if West shifts to it at trick two it presents me with a guess, I must duck to bring home the contract. Giving the lead and Weak Two opening this should be no problem. however, it got me thinking. Say Wests hand is

72

AQJ863

J9

AQx

And he opens 1 Heart, later finding himself on lead against 4 Spades. He leads the Heart Ace and now has the chance for a brilliancy. The Club Queen shift if probably the only one that sets the contract!
