Spring Fours

So the spring fours draw went up today: I have drawn Hinden in my triangle.

Of all the top sixteen seeded teams, Hinden is one of the ones you really don't want to get :(.

Does anyone have any idea who any of

Henrik Gosvig

Eirin Halvorson

Baard Risnes

are?

They have managed to slip into the seeding, despite not appearing on any EBU master point lists, so I presume they are foreign pros. Anyone know them?

No entries for them on worldbridge, so I suspect they aren't that strong. It's possible the EBU just assigned unknown foreigners a number of gold points and that was sufficient for them to be seeded.

There are a couple of weaker teams lurking in the top 16, but most are pretty tough. We've drawn De Botton as our seed and Harry Smith as our unseeded team. Obviously De Botton are favourites in our triangle but we fancy our chances of an upset.

True - but then, the same applies to most of the top 16 seeds! We have drawn Rosen in our group, which doesn't seem any easier than the seeds mentioned so far....

They seem to be Norwegian (although I was expecting Danes). I guess we'll find out on Friday....

Most of my team is "unknown foreigners" to the EBU, sadly that wasn't enough to get us seeded :P.

"unknown" in the sense of unable to discover who people are is slightly different to "unknown" but all of them live and play in England and are junior internationals.

FYP! Anyway, given that we are both going to beat De Botton, looks like the match between our teams will be the decider!

Actually I believe one of them is a Dane living in Norway. I played and directed 52 boards in the same games as two of them yesterday. If seedings were given for competent play under the influence of alcohol, they would have been severely under-seeded.

We seem to have been relatively lucky in our triangle (Hackett, Kendrick, Edwards). Not that there will be an upset, but we might not lose every match by triple-digits this year :)

There doesn't seem to be an obvious group-of-death this year, although I guess Phil's might depending on the strength of the Norwegians.

Sorry Mickey :) I didn't realise that there were 2 seeds per group .Look forward to the match> It should be great fun. can you spot the former Gold Cup winner in our line up ?

Teams 1-32 are seeded in order (although you might not agree with the order). 33 upwards are unseeded. The triangles are

seed 1, seed 32, one of 33-48 at random

seed 2, seed 31, one of 33-48 at random

seed 3, seed 30, one of 33-48 at random

etc

So one team caused the upset and the other benefitted from it...

I know Bård and Henrik. Very nice guys from Norway but a little crazy :) Say hi from me.

They used to come to the Copenhagen Bridge Festival every august where they fit in nicely with the local expert crowd.

All the forumites playing each other... phil_20686 takes down first sasioc, then mickyb, while timve kicks paulg out of the competition. Meanwhile the Hinden team lost to de Botton by a very narrow margin, 70:75. Oh well, good luck in the Punch Bowl guys.

The last seed in this event was Fredrik Nystrom, Wrang, Lambardi, and Ventin? Lol

Our triangle in the Punchbowl [for teams who had lost two of their four matches in the main event] was us, Hinden and Ventin. Sick.

What is a punchbowl? How does one win this event. Double eliminations and punchbowls, I don't get it lol. Looks like a fun event though.

It's an incredible event. I didn't realise just how good it was until I played the world champs and stuff.

Assuming 64 teams enter -

- 32 board matches, one on Friday evening then two each day.

- You have two lives. Undefeated teams play against each other and once defeated teams playing against each other.

- On Monday morning/afternoon, the "final" of the undefeated pool is played. The winner gets the next match off, through to the semi-finals on Tuesday morning. They also get their choice of oppo and can extend either the semi or the final by 8 boards if necessary.

- The Punchbowl is the first consolation event. If you lose your two lives in the main event within the first four matches, you try to qualify for the quarter-finals of this, which are 16 boards and held on Monday morning. How you qualify depends on precisely when you've gone out of the main event.

- Then there is a swiss is for anyone not in the last 12 of the main event or the last 4 of the Punchbowl.

In practice, there are always fewer than 64 entries, which means the first two matches often become a triangle, with one team going through and the other two becoming "once defeated".

In the semi-finals, I'm rooting for John Matheson, Willie Coyle, Victor Silverstone, Tom Townsend, Kitty and Brian Teltscher, who are up against Liggins. Glyn Liggins has won the event four times previously.

The kiss of death, it seems. Glyn won for the fifth time! Congratulations, anyway!

The spring fours is a great event.

We lost to frances by four imps in the triangle, then beat saisoc's team in round three, and then mickyb's team in round 4. In round five we ran into the duffelen team of duffelen, Bakhshi, Verhees, de Wijs and van Prooijen. Sadly three bermuda bowl winners+bakhshi were too much for us. Never really felt like we were in that match, they did everything right, as you would expect. Might put up a few hands later. I guess losing by 50 odd to a team that strong is not an embarrassment.

Still, I had a great deal of fun, and its really the only chance to play strong foreign teams in long matches in the UK calendar.
