straube
1) First seat favorable imps. We don't have a weak 2D so I preempted 3D. xx Kx KQxxxx xxx 2) After 1C on my right all white imps. I preempted 2H with... xx QJxxxx Kxx Qx
Zelandakh
The first is somewhat offbeat in first seat but the sort of bid I make sometimes depending on how I am feeling, state of the match, and who the opponents are. Objectively you are too flat but these kinds of bids can be effective so long as you and partner are on the same wavelength for what qualifies as a 3m opening. The second is practically automatic for me - the risk of preempting partner is reduced.
Phil
The 1st is 100% 3♦ for me at w/r. The 2nd is reasonable, but you do have a little defense, so I'd probably settle for 1♥, but 2♥ is fine if partner has already passed.
awm
The second one is automatic for me. If the X's are really all tiny cards I would pass the first; I need some spots or some shape to preempt 3x on a six card suit, even favorable. KQ98xx would be about my minimum suit on this shape/vulnerability.
phil_20686
I like to bid 3d on these hands at favourable in first seat. My rule for first in preempts in 3m are that they are all headed by HH, so that partner can bid 3N with confidence when its right. The second one just looks like a routine 1H overcall to me. The ODR and suit quality are all wrong for 2H imo.
mr1303
For the second one, I really want to see the 10 or at least the 9 8 to be bid 2H here.
ArtK78
I guess I am getting more conservative in my old age, but I don't really like either of them at IMPs. Both have some upside to them, but they also have considerable downside. And it is the high variance that I am not really fond of. I suppose if you are playing against a team that you rate not to beat, these kind of high variance actions are fine. But if you are the better team, it would be in your best interest not to increase the variance.
MrAce
I would do exactly as you did in both hands.
nigel_k
Definitely agree with the first one. The second one is questionable but these things often work and I don't have any problem with it, especially if partner has seen this before. Finch
There isn't a right answer to these. Both actions are not silly, as long as partner expects that these hands are within range. If partner hates them, don't do them. (FWIW I am fine with both of them; at favourable with a passed partner the second would be a 3H overcall)
ggwhiz
I don't have any problem with it, especially if partner has seen this before. Most important in that my partner almost always does the right thing over a 1♥ overcall on #2 but tends to go wrong on occasion if I bid 2♥. The first 1 is more of a 50-50 but I'm looking to act in the way my partner is most comfortable.
