frank0
As title, by off-shape I mean not traditional 4432/4333/5m332, but something like 5M332/5422/6322/5431(singleton honor)/6331(singleton honor) or even wider range of shape. Most likely you decide to open 1NT because you have no proper rebid if you open 1 level suit. My question is, if you allow 1NT includes wide range of shape, do you still consider this opening bid as "limited bid" and let partner decide everything in the rest of bidding? Let's say you play 2/1 15-17 1NT[hv=pc=n&s=sakh32daqtck65432&d=s&v=0&b=11&a=1n2hpp]133|200[/hv]You decide to open 1NT because you feel either rebidding 2♣ or 3♣ is improper, now partner decide to defend 2♥, do you allow to pull?[hv=pc=n&s=skj9hqdk65432cak2&d=s&v=0&b=11&a=1n2c(Majors)d2hppdp]133|200[/hv]Again you don't want to rebid broken suit at 3 level so you open 1NT, now do you allow to bid after 2♥ or pull the double? mike777
1) easy x here in balance seat, remember pard could not x 2h for penalty.2) easy pass second x is penalty. I open offshape often, dont change your bidding at all.
barmar
I got a bottom when I tried to be clever on this hand:[hv=pc=n&s=shqj54djt94caj843&n=sqjt3ha63dak852ck&d=n&v=e&b=9&a=1np2cp2sp3np4hppp]266|200[/hv]Deep Finesse says I could make 4♥, but I managed to find a way to go down. But 4NT and 6♦ also both make. However, partner admits that he could have helped: instead of jumping to 3NT, he could have bid 3♣. Knowing that clubs are well controlled, I wouldn't go for the Moysian.
mgoetze
The two auctions you gave are entirely different. In the first one, partner didn't decide to defend per se, he just didn't have a convenient bid. If one of my clubs were a spade, I would have an automatic reopening double here. So bidding 3♣ is absolutely fine. In the second, partner has stated very emphatically that he wants to play 2♥X. Only pull this one if you plan to look for a new partner.
ArtK78
Once I open an offshape 1NT, I treat it as a normal 1NT.
kuhchung
You decided to open 1NT because you thought it was the best description of your hand. Now, when partner makes decisions, you want to override him? Edit: This wasn't really a fair post. I can see the urge to balance on board 1.
ggwhiz
You decided to open 1NT because you thought it was the best description of your hand. Now, when partner makes decisions, you want to override him? On principle I agree with this. I have strong agreements with my pard on how to show this point range in an unbalanced hand without opening 1nt, patterning out with a 5-4-3-1 or bidding 2nt after a sign-off with 5-4-2-2 etc. Also if pard bids stayman over a 1nt opener, we respond with a 5-card Major and pard bids 2nt, 3 of our Major shows 5 cards, forcing. We are comfortable with the amount of ground we have covered but the 1nt openings with a stiff are considered masterminding. With the rest of our structure, we reject those ones out of hand. I doubt many would play X as penalty....so IMO with only a dub ♠ there is nothing easy about X in the balance!, 3♣ maybe.

Remember pard could not make a penalty x of 2h as that would be for takeout not penalty. rho did not raise h.
