bd71
Matchpoints. w/r. (2♠) - 3♦ - (P) - 3♥(P) - 4♥ - (P) - 4♠(P) - 5♣ - (P) - 5N 3♥ forcing. 4♠/5♣ show 1st or 2nd round controls. What should 5N mean here? Please think of your answer before clicking the spoiler to see the two hands. Here are both hands. Appreciate comments on the bidding. East (2nd seat)♠x♥KQ♦K97xx♣KJTxx EDIT: original had 14 cards, East only has 5 clubs West (4th seat)♠AJ♥A9xxx♦AT8x♣Ax 5N was intended as "pick-a-slam 6♦ or 6♥," but interpreted as "evaluate your hand for 6♥ or 6N." TWO4BRIDGE
Before I looked at the spoiler, I thought 5NT was pick-a-slam, but I thought it was between ♥ and NT . It didn't dawn on me for ♦ to be one of the options. Advancer has a great hand, but the 3H bid shifted the focus for the trump suit. With good 4 card ♦ support, perhaps Advancer should cuebid 3S! to show that .Of course when you do that, then any ♥ bid is a cuebid ( at the 4-level ) and not showing a "suit" . Then too 4H! may be kickback for ♦ if you play that... which would work out great here if Overcaller used it. Darn preempts.
rmnka447
At the table, I'd probably be pretty confused as to what 5 NT meant. Certainly, it's forcing to slam, but there's nothing that's been bid so far that indicates advancer has ♦s. So, it's unclear which choice is being offered. To avoid confusion, it's probably better for advancer to bid 6 ♦ and show the ♦ fit. Then overcaller can make the decision whether to return to the better matchpoint scoring contract of 6 ♥ with the appropriate ♥ holding.

wyman
After RKC, are we sure that 6♦ is not asking for a 3rd rd ctrl in ♦? I mean we can look at east's hand and know, since wtf does west have then? [didn't ask about ♥Q, which we have. didn't ask about the ♣K, etc.] But can west know that east will know that 6♦ is not a 3rd rd ctrl ask? Also, I know it's MP, but with 4-card support in ♦ and a partner that didn't dbl, I'm surprised folks seem to be ok with 3♥ on A9xxx. lalldonn
Who said anything about "after RKC"? I don't see any RKC.
Gerben42
If 5NT is pick-a-slam, why didn't West pick ♦ himself? If 5NT was a grand slam try for 7♦, without known support partner cannot get this right.

Fluffy
I play 5NT is KCB after we cannot use 4NT. However on this sequence we could use 4NT, just that overcaller for a reason decided not to, so 5NT cannot be KCB. East's hand should not even try to play in hearts, after 3[di overcall his main concern would be to pick between 6♦ and 7♦. However it is right to bid 3♥ on the way to help him evaluate. He did right, but after 4♥ it is time to stop giving partner chances of making bad bids like 4NT of 6♥ and bid the suit he wants to play. Statto
What should 5N mean here?I'd have taken it as GSF for ♥, so we'd be in 7♥. Great if it makes, but it probably doesn't.
