9 losers or 4 controls?

Recommended Posts

Playing a 14-16 NT, would you open

Kxx

AKx

xxx

JTxx

(this time it was 1st seat at MPs, both vulnerable, feel free to say in which other circumstances you'd open)

1 shows either HHxx or a 5+ suit, so 1 shows 2+.

If you open 1 (or if you pass but make clubs QTxx or QJxx) and it goes

1-1-x(4-4 in the majors)-p

what rebid do you prefer?

Pass unless you typically open hands this bad.

This really is one of the worst hands I have ever seen with an AK and a K.

Well that's my question: do you think you should have an agreement to typically open hands this bad (assuming you play 14-16)? Of course if your agreement is you open all 11's, you open, if your agreement is you pass all 11's, you pass.

Well yes, of course.

If I have discretion on 11 counts, I pass this one.

A 14-16 NT increases the frequency of opening 1N (14>17) and it meshes well with a semi forcing NT (you usually don't have game with the wrong 13 after 1M - 1N).

If you want to stretch your opening bids a point you can, but don't feel like you need to.

I would pass unless I were playing a strong club.

I'm not sure where this thread is going.

It's not a particularly bad 11 (I'm surprised at the bad press it's getting), so if my agreement is to open, say, 'half' or 'many' 11s, I open.

after 1c 1D x P I bid 1H.

Agreed. The shape is terrible and the auction unfortunate, but this is as good as a 4333 11-count can be, except for something like AK and an A and some tens.

I would rebid 1nt, with an eye to shape and point count-showing, leaving the stopper or lack thereof on the sideline. If partner can follow with a stopper or club support or a 5CM, great. If not, 1NT may be our best spot, diamond stopperlessness aside.

We agree. I hate 4333 but this doesn't look like a trashy 11 to me with those controls and the ten in a JTxx suit.
