Playing 2/1 with 5 card majors.

2 correctly alerted as drury.

First time I ever opened a 4 card major and it was a really crappy one at that, but the look on my partners face when I passed 2, well it was online, but I bet it was priceless :)

I dunno, I thought it was amusing and not entirely without merit, was a really good board but that might just be resulting.

Might make the pass with better clubs.

Much as I like to open junk in 3rd, I'd pass. I'm not jonesing for a spade lead with A-empty 4th. There's the preemption, but you can say that about any hand with four spades.

Drury was, until a very few years ago, illegal in England, as it can be used as a psyche control with long clubs in a weak hand.

Which was always a ridiculous argument. I mean by that argument stayman could be defined a psyche controlling when you open 1N in third on a weak hand with long clubs. Whenever you psche, bad things can happen, and also good things can happen. I can only imagine that the RA felt that after psyche bad things should happen. :)

Well, it is a gamble, but 3+ spades may mean only a 4/3 trump suit if it's only 3 spades, which may or may not be worse than what you have in clubs, and so it's a risk in either case.

Yes and it could be a 5-1 or even a 5-0 club fit. Agree with Han. Passing is not a gamble, it is poor bridge.
