4S the first round.

When I saw the thread originally I thought you were asking if I'd bid 4S after 3H P 4H and thought that was possibly an interesting question (although I'd pass), so I don't think the actual problem is difficult.

At IMPs, this is an easy 4 bid. You can't tell who'll make what. But you don't to be in the position where they are making 4 and your side is making 4 .

Partner should have at least 3 s along with 4 s, so it looks like your side has the black suits and opponents the reds.

Bidding 4 also puts some pressure on opener because of the uncertainty of whether you're sacrificing or bidding to make.

Bidding 4 also puts some pressure on opener because of the uncertainty of whether you're sacrificing or bidding to make.

If opener's pard is prone to randomly bidding 4H, sometimes with strength and sometimes with weakness and long hearts, then the pressure is on opener.

Otherwise the pressure is on YOUR partner to maintain some discipline and cut you some slack after you bid the obvious 4S.

So obvious that (given that it's posted here) partner almost certainly has a big single suiter with diamonds and this is going to get grisly.

If partner has a single-suiter with diamonds, he should have overcalled in diamonds.

I agree with that, but a lot of people consider an 18 or 19 count with diamonds too good. Admittedly in this case, it looks like either he has so many diamonds it's not likely to be a problem, or he has a fit in one of the blacks, but Ax, AK, AKJxxx, xxx doesn't look very pretty.
