Hanoi5
LHO deals. MP's. White vs Red: ♠J9876xx♥x♦KQJxx♣--- (Pa)-1♥-(2♣)-??? Would you double here? What would you plan to bid over partner's rebid in hearts or NT? Say you bid 2♠, what would you bid over partner's 3NT?
mike777
2s then 4s over 3nt
nigel_k
Definitely don't double. I would bid 2♠ and just follow up with 3♠, or 4♠ if partner jumps to 3NT. Bidding diamonds could be right but it suggests a better hand and maybe partner can bid diamonds himself on some of the hands where we belong there,
mikeh
You really can't afford to double, lest he leave it in. White v red is the time he is most likely to leave it in, and this is mps, where 200 can be a magic number, while 500 against a game is also usually very good. You have as close to negative defence as you can get. So 2♠...this is an overbid in terms of hcp, and far from perfect in terms of playing strength, since diamonds will be tough to find when right. But nothing else appears to be less bad. Over 3N by partner, we really have no choice, once again: 4♠. This hand isn't good enough to bid a forcing 4♦ over 3N, and this is definitely not the dummy to table in 3N, even tho one can readily construct layouts where 3N makes and 4♠ doesn't. ggwhiz
When I started playing a buddy of mine once doubled my 2♣ bid on a similar hand (he was 6-6 though) and I went down 1 for a zero against the field, mostly in 6♠. His pard had a 3-5-0-5 and that double is next scheduled to work on April 1st, 2095. 4♠ for me and damn the torpedos but I have sympathy for 2♠ in case diamonds can come into play. I'll feel pretty good if they bid 5♣ and partner hits it.
