7-4-2

I would have tried 4d, not perfect.

6d4h big hand.

I think a 7-1 fit may play better than 44 h

again far from perfect.

good answer, for a different reason, IMO. The reason we want to bring in, as best we can, the distribution that we have is so that partner can participate when (if) there is more opposing competition.

If 4D is non-serious with 4-6+ in the reds, it might accomplish that goal. If partner is in the dark when we jump to 4H instead as to our strength and shape, neither of us will have a clue what to do next.

While I agree that Ds might play better, 4D for me is out of the question. A 4D bid with my partners shows 6-7 solid Ds and 4 card support for partner. You don't have that; funny, I thought that was standard for good pairs.

+1

A typical hand for a 4 bid would be:

Ax

QJxx

AKQJxx

x

did I say not perfect?....and I understand if you hate it.

If you have a perfect bid posters did not say I note......:)

I think we all know what a perfect 4d bid looks like and this aint it.

Sorry, Mike. Perfect was not even in the discussion. It does not even resemble what a 4 bid should look like.

A 4 bid is a slam try. This hand is not a slam try. Some wouldn't bid game on it.

I would drive this hand to game in hearts, but having decided to do so, I would bid 2. I might learn more and be able to try for slam (AKxxxx and a stiff diamond is plenty for slam). They're at unfavorable so there's no need to make a pressure call now.

Doesn't the overcall make some difference?

To some of us, it does. We are preparing partner to make the further decisions for our side if there is more competition.

Some of us don't use 4D as a slam-try anyway, and forgo the splinter in clubs to use 4C as a red 4-6 slam try. This (the original treatment of the convention with no name) is useful for us. In competition, we really want to emphasize pattern and will stretch suit quality of 4D to do so.

100%

We are going to game and there is no rush or cost to involving partner. The 1 bidder could have such good clubs (and not such good spades) that we might make a grand, not that we can bid it.

Put me down for 4, west hasn't bid yet and when it goes 2 from me and 4from west partner has no way of working out where we should be.

If I get 4 in then he is better placed to decide the right spot, yes I have 1 more and no but hey at least he now knows that at least 10 of my cards are red.

  • 2 weeks later...

my considered bid would be 3 hts--- assuming pards 1 ht can be only a 4 card suit,

more importantly how many points to respond 1 ht.- 6 Plus.next opp will

or will not bid,giving your partner a free nod-assuming 4 hts bid-if the 1sp

bidder now bids again--- X or 5hts in order. QED
