I thought that 3S should be forcing here (agree?), but didn't know if 4D was and was worried that we might miss a game. If you are really worried that 4♦ will be passed out (though I would think if West has a hand where he wants to pass 4♦ you will often be in the right spot) then I think you would be better off just bidding 5♦. It is completely weird to me that 4D would not be forcing. It seems like 1D (3H) 3S (p) 4C (p) 4D which is obviously forcing since 3S is a game force. I don't understand how one can bid reasonably playing 4D as NF. You can easily have slams, want to find good games, etc, all they have done is preempt. Sacrificing the ability to set trumps below game when you have both shown strength and they hve shown weakness in order to play 4D does not only seem bad to me, it violates all common bidding principles that I know of.
