Two or Four?

Bid 2 and leave room for opps to bid more accurately...bid 4 and risk playing game on a garbage hand...

I still say that you go directly to 4...

My reasoning is even if they double and partner has absolutely nothing...I expect 4 to make in this situation. The worst I expect with such good hearts is -3 for 500 points to them.

Of course the opponents may be sitting on a no fit hand, but I will still try.

I have no idea what an action double means do you?

if it means 7-4 than say so

as usual you know what x means exactly but no you dont tell us.

WE are told cute words such as action

not optional, or maximim or takeout or other....we can ask opp but you know we will never get an answer or we are told we are idiots

Action double means exactly what it says. It's a double and it's an action.

Why would you want to take action after showing your hand with 4? Because you have something unexpected. Because partner won't know exactly what it is, you must at least have extra defense because partner will sit it some part of the time. Some part of the time he will bid 5H to make or save. It's possible for him to even bid 4NT to look for a possible minor fit, with say 2155 or so.

IMO word optional describing double is way more vague.

mich-b, I don't quite follow your point about not bidding 4 if not able to double later. Do you feel happier bidding 2H and passing after 4S comes back to you?

I meant to suggest that it is wrong to bid 4 and later pass with a hand as good as this.

With the original hand I feel happy bidding 4 and doubling 4 later if necessary.

With same shape but less defense - 4 then pass.

With same strength but less shape (only 6 instead of 7?) - 2 then Pass.

I meant that it shows extra playing strength and some defence, and indicates that the preempter wants to take some action other than defending 4 undoubled, but is unsure whether to bid on or to defend the contract doubled.

If I'd meant that it showed a 7-4 I would indeed have said so. Why do you assume that I said one thing and meant another?

Most bridge organisers employ an official whose job is to keep order and ensure that people comply with the rules. If your opponents refuse to give you an adequate explanation or behave obnoxiously, the best way to deal with it is to call the director. That will usually be more effective than posting about it in an internet forum.

I don't mind 4 or 2 but in the former case I expect it to come back to me in 4 almost always.

I'm picking 2 hoping to bring clubs into play at some lower point and my partnership doesn't open as light as others so pard could have a pretty good hand. Besides, the K and an Ace may be enough for slam that we can bid once in a while.

This has double game swing written all over it (opposite long clubs and short hearts) so I'm in for the 5 level if need be and would rather gather clues than blast and guess.
