email discussion, hand evaluation

Two hands:

1) AQJ87x, AK, xxx, Jx

2) Qx, AKQTxx, Jxx, Kx

What do you bid after partner responds 1N to your major suit opening?

For this thread please assume some common version of 2/1. Also assume no Gazzilli(2c) convention.

Would you ever consider opening 1nt with either hand?

The funny thing is that partner might not have had the chance to respond 1NT to my opening bid with either hand, as I would be tempted and might open 1NT myself on both.

The first one I'd rebid 3. The 2nd I'm tempted raise to 2N, as the hand looks no trumpy - though I know that's the incorrect bid (normally it would show 18-19 balanced. I'll probably wimp out and just rebid 2

AQJ87x AK xxx Jx knr=16.30

Qx AKQTxx Jxx Kx knr=16.55

I think I'd rebid 2S with the first. I like 1N for the second; a source of running tricks and the lead coming to me.

Yes both are possible 1NT maximum openings, but in close decisions I prefer a 3rd card in the other major.

With a 6 card major and only 2 in the other I'm planning 1M>>3M. with both. If partner has a dog I'm likely down, OTOH with dub support and a few points game should have a decent shot.
