4; partner's spade support may be much worse, and in spades you may be cut off from dummy's hearts.

(Of course, I'm accustomed to disciplined weak 2s in 1st and 2nd seat: two of the top three or three of the top five honors. YMMV)

The full hand:

[hv=pc=n&s=st2hakjtda983c752&w=sakq864h84d5cajt6&n=sj93h9dqt742ck983&e=s75hq76532dkj6cq4&d=e&v=n&b=2&a=2h(Weak)d4hppdppp]399|300[/hv]

4x wasn't a success, going for 500, with an extra trick available in spades (2 extra by East). I did ask after the hand if the opponents had the agreement that double of a weak 2 was for penalties, but they assured me their agreement was takeout.

If PD can open a weak 2 with Qxxxxx and 6 outside HCP, you certainly can't blast to game with your hand whether or not the opps make a take out double.

To be fair it was a bit unlucky that on top of all that the 6 outside HCP were not working very well. Give partner A rather than KJ and put the trumps where they should be given the t/o double, and game looks like a fair prospect.

I would bid 2 over a partner that is capable of 2 on that trash. Methinks you are in for a few more of these before (if) your pard reconsiders matters.

I once played with a guy famous for his random 2's and got him to promise he would own 6 of them (so I thought), just in 2nd seat only. Two hands in, he opened 2 in second and went for a HUGE number.

I said "you promised to have a 6 bagger" and with a hurt look he said "I did, clubs".

I was actually East - I posted this hand from my partner's perspective because I was more interested in what his call should be. ;)

On reflection, I think I was probably being a bit too aggressive when I chose to open this.

IMO if opening 2 with this is the chosen partnership style, PD should bid 2 over their X.

The style is legit and taken to the extreme, served Marty Bergen very well but it drove his partners crazy. Once Larry Cohen couldn't take it anymore Marty was pretty much out of the game. A shame cause he's brilliant.

2 on this isn't as bad as I first stated just REALLY not to my personal taste.
