I opened this hand, I have a few questions about my reasoning for opening as I did, your comments would be appreciated

1/. As far as I was concered this was an extremely strong hand, and my partner was either going to bid hearts or the opps may bid them.

2/. 3 suited hands generally get me in trouble and I find difficult to bid from a 2club opener

3/. I had every confidence that my pard would not leave me in club

4/. I would get the oporrtunity to reverse or show a very powerful hand in the auction and thus lose nothing by not opening 2!C

anyway comments please, feel free to bash me if you like, I am quite thick skinned LOL

I think you are vey lucky your RHO decided to overcall on that crap. It is not everyday opponents with five hcp will keep auctions open for you. I think there is a fair chance the auction could have gone 1-all pass. It might have done so even if your partners spade JACK was swapped for the spade King, or iif your spade Queen was the the king and your partner's JAck was the Queen. As it is, you can make six spades because of doubleton spade kng, think how much more frustrating it would be to play 1 when 6 had even a better play.

I think if you can manage it, you need to include the ability to include such hands in your bidding structure. Some include these in their multi-2D opening bids. I include them in my 2cl opening bids, taking advantage of the fact that I don't need a natural 2NT rebid after a 2 opening bid (bid balance through 2 for me).

To be honest, with the method I use, it is even possible to sniff at slam. My auction would be a safe, and sane...

2 - 2

2N - 3

4[di[ - 4

Pass

Where 2 = death instant double negative hand

2NT = three suiter,

3 = ask which three suits (chance to get out in 3 of a major)

4 = 2-3 losers with short hearts

4 = I am a wimp, my club doubleton might be take care of a loser and if you ahve only two losers we might be missing something.....

IF you are worried about the club doubleton covering a loser, asking bids are available, starting with 4. If I wanted to BS you, I would say I would worry about missing this slam, so over 4, the bidding would continue...

4 - 4

5 -

Where 4 is the asking bid, and 5 shows "2 losers" and a heart void. Now 5 would ask about controls, but to go here, you are committed to slam anyway, which is why I would not play for the perfect hand opposite this junk, and that is exactly what your partner has (well you could swap spade Queen for spade king), the perfect hand. So I would stick in 4.

I have two theads on this method here in these forums... 4441 and 5440 hands in forcing 2C. and More on 4441 or 4450 hands and 2C
