Claim at trick one

Playing on BBO, I pick up a beautiful 2 loser hand:

[hv=pc=n&k=e&s=st7hjt6532d752c54&w=skqj653h8dkt964c9&n=s842hq94dqj83c832&e=sa9hak7dacakqjt76&d=w&v=0&b=8&a=2s(weak)p4n(RKC)p5d(1%20keycard)p5h(Q%20of%20%21s%3F)p6d(Yes%2C%20and%20K%21d)p7nppp&p=hj&c=13]399|300[/hv]

If my partner doesn't have the Q, how should I continue? 5NT to ask for the K, or should I be asking for a third-round control?

if partner is not a joker it will be very hard for grand to be hopeless after he shows K. 5NT is the correct bid at IMPs if partner denies Q because if partner denies K as well you are better in 7 than 7NT.

But at MPs I think you just have to bid 7NT after blackwood.

no messing around!

if p has the s K (he has shown it with 5 ) chances for 7nt are very good:

p may have the Q or the K

if LHO has the guard a squeeze is assured

if RHO has the guard a triple squeeze may develop

correct discarding will be very (!) difficult for opps

playing imps one may consider 7 ( ruff), so ask for d K with 5 NT)

playing matchpoints i think 7 NT now is correct

That is some hand. Good thing your p didn't open 1 (as I would have done) because I imagine in that case your head would have exploded...

Yup, 5 loser hand is not a 2 opener.

Reminds me of the time I picked up a 4 loser hand and heard partner open 2 (x, A, AKxxx, Axxxxx), but not as silly as partner's 27 count with AKQJxx when he heard me open a weak 2.

I remember I once was playing in an indy game where each round of three boards you played one board with each of the three other people at the table. I had just moved to a new table and sat across from a guy I'd never played with before (or against - it wasn't my usual club). I picked up a 27 HCP hand and I was rather shocked when he did open on the one level. It turned out he had a 12 count and we were only missing a jack. Believe it or not, I too was able to claim at trick one. :D
