Quartic
Playing on BBO with a pickup partner, this hand occurred: [hv=pc=n&s=sq5hk86dtcakt7632&w=skh32dkqj875cqj98&n=sa96hjt975d942c54&e=sjt87432haq4da63c&d=e&v=n&b=2&a=1s2c2d2h4sdppp&p=cac8c4s2s3s5sksac5s4c2c9sjsqh2s6h6h3h9hqstc3cjs9s8c6cqd2hah8d5h5s7c7d7d4&c=11]399|300[/hv] Assign the blame? wyman
Uh, 2H is from another planet, but I also don't really expect to beat this.

BunnyGo
I think East over-valued his trump quality. North was a bit aggressive for his 2♥ bid, but it depends on your style of advances--if it was a positive free bid, then I think he overbid a lot. The double was also a bit aggressive, but it depends on what 2♥ showed.
quiddity
It's not that South has junk or was overly aggressive. He has a very nice hand but it's an offensive hand; AK-7th of clubs, K-3rd in partner's 5+ card suit, a stiff in the opponent's suit. 2♥ was an overbid, double was a misbid. the hog
Agree with S2000. Agree with this and by regression with S2000. By the way, the 4S bid was also shall we say "optimistic"?

Quartic
I was South. I had been planning to bid 4♥ after partner's 2♥ bid, but I didn't think I was good enough to try 5♥ over 4♠, so I doubled instead. I was expecting a much better hand from partner for his 2♥ bid. South for doubling with a hand unsuitable for a penalty double. Give East AKxxxxx x Ax xxxx

mikeh
I agree with those blaming North....that 2♥ bid was really bad. However, S also dropped the ball, imo. He didn't listen to the auction. His hand told him that at least one of the other 3 players was ovebidding significantly. That suggests shape is a factor...and he has an anti-defensive spade holding....it doesn't get much worse than Qx, since the other side is bidding to game without the Q, so have compensating values, such a a 7th spade. He has Kxx in hearts....and if his partner has stretched to bid, then he will often hold 6+ hearts, so the Kxx is not good defensively. He has 7 clubs, and (again) if partner is stretching to bid it may be because he has a club fit, so the AK are not great defensively. I'd rather bid 5♣ with the S hand than double. My hand, on the auction, is mostly offence, altho the Qx spades is simply a global negative. I am not saying I would bid 5♣: having seen the hand, it is tough to be objective....if I did make the call, dummy would be more than a little disappointing.
