Great biding. It makes you declarer which is a success for any partnership.

If a mere mortal had been seated south however, 3 Nt had been very bad.

3 is just justified if you have no NT bid to show GF values with good stoopers in the minors.

I'll join the crowd questioning why bid 3nt rather than 4 after finding out and 5-3 when both hands are unbalanced.

I've aleady it bad, bad, bad :( Thinking I want to play the hand is one thing, not thinkng through that it's an unlikely contract is terrible.

I don't understand those who are critical of North for opening this hand. Does it not meet the rule of 20? Or if you prefer, the rule of 22 (rule of 20 + 2QT)? It figures to be a 6 loser hand. Seems to me that this fits the criteria for an opening bid.

Actually 2.5 QT's if you consider AQ to be 1.5 quickies, and I always do; particularly if the hand also contains the 10, which it does. In fact there's an argument for calling that 1.75 or even 2 quick tricks. The fact that all 10 HCP and all 2/2.5 QT's are in the 2 five-card suits makes it even better.

3D is good here to check for the 5th heart in North. But once South finds it, he ignores it anyway... ugh. 4H is clear.

As for opening that North hand... semi-ugh

So you think if Jilly bids 2NT, partner is precluded from bidding 3H with a 5th H?

I have no problem with this auction until the 3N bid. The only reason to bid 3 rather than NT is to find out if partner has a 5th heart so you can bid 4.

tYes, but you bid 3NT rather than 2NT. Its not unreasonable to play in 3NT rather than 4H just change North's hand from a offence orientated hand with his two aces and other honour to a defensive hand with KQJxx KQJxx and 3NT looks so much better.

Well 2N is NF for me not playing 2/1 and I feel I've got too much for that, if 2N is forcing, clearly it's best.

Also opposite KQJxx, KQJxx you play hearts twice, they duck twice and you make about 7 tricks in no trumps with 4 requiring a trump lead to have a decent chance of beating it.
