Checking for Stoppers WITHOUT Lebensohl?

Matchpoints, last board. 55. Need at least an average board to make the money.

Hand:

S: A83.

H: Q4.

D: AK65.

C: K974.

Auction:

LHO: P: RHO: Me:

P 1C P 1D

2H P P ?

I wanted to make SURE that I was IN 3NT if partner had a heart stopper, but STAY OUT of 3NT if partner did not have one. NONE of the potential bids queried were Lebensohl, so I had to guess. I guessed to bid 3NT. Partner did NOT have a !H stop, I had a !H lead, and went down two. Most of the Field was in 5C, making, and I missed the money.

What should I have done?

Does Lebensohl normally apply here? I thought 3H = ask for stop in H is very common, but wouldn't be surprised if GIB doesn't play that.

I remember recalling that it PROMISED a stop in Hearts, not asking for one.

In checking Myhands, it appeared I should have just bid 3NT my first turn. I would have had a !D lead and made 3NT with three overtricks instead of going down two. (Yes, twelve tricks on a !D lead, seven on a !H. Maybe I should have bid 6NT and hope for a !D lead for a top, and a !H lead would just turn a tie for a bottom (what I got for 3NT-2) to a cold bottom (6NT-5).

For GIB 2NT would be invite for 3NT.

With this hand probably would be easier to bid 1-2 and then do reverse with diamonds, stronger hand and will avoid the need of cuebidding opps call.

I don't see how I could bid 2C or 3C with how GIB bids it.

Really, I think my auction should DISCOURAGE a H lead considering my 3NT after a 2H overcall promised (even it didn't deliver) a Heart Stopper, while a jump to 3NT would not promise a stopper in any specific suit. Perhaps if I bid 2C, gib my still bid 2H or 3H, but I might still get the D lead had I bid it.

So, I guess the moral of the story is that if I have the HCP, but worried about stoppers in any key suits, just bid 3NT as that would make it more likely the GIB opponent would not lead the suit I don't have stopped?

What i mean was 1 - 2 promises 4+ ; 3- ; 3- ; 10+ HCP; forcing to 2N. Then your 3 rebid over partner's something will show GF values.

Something like:

1 - 2

2NT - 3

If opponent intervenes at some point bidding 2/3 you can just bid 2/3 showing your stopper in spades and then no need to mention 's.

Then your partner seeing his 's stopper could bid 3NT.

If opponents don't overcall you could bid 1/2 over partner 1/1 as 4SF, but if they do then rebid problem looks like already happened.

No best solution for sure whatever you bid anyway, i'm just telling my suggestion for minorish hand with more then simply 3NT values.

Guessing opps ( whoever is on lead ) won't lead his or partner's suit just because contract is NT, might be risky.
