What's the meaning of X if 1S promise 5?

In different partnerships I've played both of the above meanings. However (and I don't mean to distract from your question), I'd recommend changing the meaning 1 to showing at most 3 spades, competitive values, no heart stopper, and no clear direction in any auction starting:

1m-(1H)-??

This makes bidding hands like:

Axx, Txx, KQx, Jxxx

much easier. Otherwise you'd have to pass with the start 1-(1)-??.

The only change you have to make is for the auction

1m-(1H)-X to show either 4 or 5 spades, and then support doubles are clearly on.

Your recommendation works well when hands turn up which have values, fewer than 4 spades and unsuitable for a raise, but there are other hands where it works better to distinguish between exactly 4 spades & 5+ spades. For example, if the next hand jump raises in hearts, it can be very useful for Opener to know how many spades partner has.

I play both treatments, but I'm not sure which is better overall.

With two partners I play X as a doubleton honor in spades and a desire to compete if responder has promised 5.

In the past I used it to distinguish 3- and 4-card support. I have no strong feeling which is better.

I mean I am serious :) Support is terrible in standard.

First of all I need a bid with say: xx x AKxxx AJTxx and that bid should be 3C.

Good/bad 2NT could solve this problem but not really as 2N is also needed as natural.

So if I play support and I get dealt:

xx xx AKQxx AKxx or Ax x AKQxxx KJx or Ax AJx AQxx Kxx or x AQ AKJTxx Kxxx I guess i am just eating my cards if I play support double here at least with 3 of those hands (which ones depends if I employ good/bad 2NT)
