What is your bid? Would 4♣ be forcing?
mike777
I would x here. double is card showing, does not promise a 4 card major. New suit would be forcing 3nt tends to have a stopper x and 3nt here tends to be the same bid, you just pick the one that makes the most sense. jmcw
Yes 4♣ is forcing. Certainly not the call I would make. I think standard would be.Pass = ForcingDBL = NegSuit = Natural and Forcing3NT = To Play (w/wo stopper on agreements) In my partnership 3NT = no stop
Vampyr
I think standard would be.Pass = Forcing What do you do with a hand that would have passed 2NT?
CSGibson
I play negative doubles, I would pass & hope partner can reopen with X so I can pass again.
jmcw
What do you do with a hand that would have passed 2NT? It's the risk you take. Obviously there will be hands like that when just passing out 3♦ is best. If mine is a sub-par agreement, it's better than none. How do you handle it? bigbenvic
I play negative doubles, I would pass & hope partner can reopen with X so I can pass again. Same, I expect the overcaller to be a bit shapey say eg 6-4, but 500 (surely we can get at least that) rates to be a good score.
Phil
I would double.
MrAce
Interesting replies. Double of 3♦ is negative for me, and my hand looks like anything except a take-out for ♦ hand. So double is not an option for me. And this guy is bidding 3♦ red vs white over a 2NT opening .... unless it is christmass and overcaller is Santa Claus, i expect him to have tons of tricks and/or shape. To be honest i dont know which action is correct, but at the table i would probably just bid 3NT and hope we make it and if we can not each under trick is -50. If we are doubled i will run to 4♣. I am targeting to get over with this annoying board with least damage possible and being non vulnerable i believe i am doing the right thing. I think starting DBL is asking for trouble. wyman
How do you guys (with serious agreements) play the sequence 2N (3D) X (P)3H (P) 4C I was kind of thinking this seems weak, but then we don't know that opener's gonna bid hearts and 2N (3D) X (P)3S (P) 4C sure sounds like responder is 4-5/6 or something. I'd play the double as game-forcing, so in both sequences 4♣ is natural and forcing, presumably with four of the other major.
gnasher
In the OP, I wouldn't play pass as forcing, and I'd play double by either hand as takeout. I don't want to defend 3♦ undoubled, and I'm not that keen to defend it doubled opposite Ax. I do want to play in game, so I bid 3NT. Partner is likely to have a diamond stop, especially after the overcall - if RHO had solid diamonds, he might well have passed 2NT, hoping to be on lead against 3NT.
whereagles
I'll just bid 3NT and KISS.
ahydra
Needs agreement I think. In absence of those I think whereagles' approach is practical. ahydra
